Having real problems buying for my brother and dad, both are a pain to buy for at the best of times and I'm currently unable to walk around any shops so reliant on internet shopping - which sounds like it should be easier, but I'm actually just totally stumped.

Dad has no hobbies (how is that even possible?!) and has already made a point of saying how tired he is of receiving food based gifts - he has coeliacs so people think they are being helpful buying him specialist treats. So I'm thinking of buying a board game as he's quite big on family stuff, and would probably appreciate something we could all do together. The sillier the suggestions here the better, doesn't need to be child friendly either.

Brother is 27, with an odd sense of humour. Would prefer to avoid drinking type presents as I know he's been making a conscious effort to drink less. He's an Arsenal fan, and into programmes like Family Guy etc. Past few years I've ended up buying him retro 80's/90's kids stuff (eg. Thundercats).

Budget is up to about £30 each.

Have tried looking at the usual suspects like Firebox and IWOOT but wasn't too inspired.

Any help hugely appreciated!

Board games we love: Cranium and Perudo. Perhaps your Dad will like them?

lizzywig · 11/12/2013 16:54

I got my dad a nice jumper from woolovers, some trinkets for the garden and 10 tubes of shaving cream (don't ask). A nice jumper usually goes down well, perhaps the same for your brother, but try the hut. What about a dvd boxset for him?

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 11/12/2013 16:54

What about a big trak for your bro? It's a remote control/ programmable car thing
My dh loves his dses Grin
Usual hq disclaimers apply

JoinTheDots · 11/12/2013 17:08

For your brother, does he have a Raspberry Pi? www.raspberrypi.org/faqs
My husband loves his, but it is a very geeky programmer thing to buy.

For your dad, are there any box sets you think he might like? Or a cinema voucher? I appreciate that is not a board game or a family thing, but it is something I have brought for the inlaws in the past. We have also gone down the route of personalised calendars with the kids on etc. I love a board game, but only have the classics like monopoly, cluedo, scrabble, etc.

MurderOfGoths · 11/12/2013 17:14

Shall look into those games :)

My brother owns a lot of DVD boxsets, wuldn't like to try and guess what he doesn't already own tbh. And I'm the geek of the family, my brother is not exactly good with computers, think the Pi would flummox him Grin

Should say, dad also doesn't watch TV (unless falling asleep in front of the rugby counts?)

The big trak looks promising!

what about the great British board game? looks quite good Grin

and maybe a remote control helicopter or something for your brother? dp loves those sort of things!!

irritatedgrumpyarse · 11/12/2013 21:50

how about a special edition Monopoly for your dad? I got DP only fools and horses version last year, he was over the moon

JoinTheDots · 12/12/2013 10:36

Of course the real solution to this is to implement the "no presents for the adults" rule and never buy for them again! Mwhahaha. I am a bit bah humbug though.

Would either of them like a nice new leather wallet? Does brother wear shirts, could he use some new cufflinks? Would £30 stretch to a seat at a rugby match for your dad (never brought one, so I don't know the cost)? Do either of them need a magazine subscription?

What does your dad do all day with no hobbies and no watching TV?!

happyfrogger · 12/12/2013 11:36

A bat box!

Badmumof3 · 12/12/2013 11:43

Last minute dot com do some good priced experience gifts, like 4x4 driving, wine tasting, zorbing and paintballing. prices start from about £15

JoinTheDots · 12/12/2013 11:52

Off to google a bat box... sounds interesting!

lilolilmanchester · 12/12/2013 11:54

Othello is a good game, but only 2 players. Played Bezzerwizzer for first time recently and enjoyed that, bit like trivial pursuit. Would either of them appreciate clothes, e.g. Jumper? Bit boring but if they're like my DH/DS it's an opportunity to spruce up their wardrobe!

laurenamium · 12/12/2013 12:01

I know you said you had looked on firebox but did you see the themed mysery boxes? I've got my dad and uncle the spicy ones...I imagine it'll have a mix of the hot sauces and the firey novelty stuff. Might be okay for your brother?

laurenamium · 12/12/2013 12:01

Mystery not mysery ha

My FIL loves playing Perudo - it's a holiday favorite and often played with Mil Sil BIL and DH late into the night
