If you have a toddler what's on your tree?

Ours used to be tasteful but now without the more expensive / fragile decorations its looking like it needs a new lease of life - anyone care to recommend their child friendly 'look' ?
If you have bought anything recently links would be most welcome.
I had a look on Pinterest but I am not very creative so was a little out of my depth!

I have ended up buying my 22 month old her own little 3ft tree this year to try to keep her hands (and homemade decorations) off the main tree, it seems to have worked, she rearranges her garish decorations every morning and the main tree has been largely left alone! Best of both worlds!

We have lots of beautiful glass ornaments that we bought from Germany & Holland (long ago). None are on the tree, we bought a cheap set of shatterproof baubles. Good thing too as DD is inordinately interested in taking the baubles off & running away with them!

WhyIRayLiotta · 10/12/2013 08:01

Mine has the special decorations at the top and cheaper baubles / pieces at the bottom. The lower branches are also currently sporting an elmo teddy and a pair of shoes. [hmmm]

We toddler proofed the tree this year and the lovely little soul has not touched it... she admires the 'twinkle twinkle lights' from a nice distance.

I went for lots of these wooden ones, decopage baubles from asda and sainsburys, lots and lots of little felt stars, hearts, trees and snowflakes from sainsburys multipack and then larger individual felt decorations from B&Q, sainsburys and M&S like this star, tree, heart, envelope, tree, reindeer, bauble, bauble etc.

We lost decorations moving house (fear we have left them in the old houses attic) so had to replace them all. For enough to fill two trees we were around £200. I would suggest grabbing some of the half price bargains around now!

Last year I replaced all my breakable baubles with wooden/decoupage/fabric ones so it doesn't matter if they get pulled off the tree and dropped. This year I involved ds (2.9) in decorating the tree with me and although he occasionally re-arranges the lower decorations he's been pretty good.

The other thing I did this year is invest in a really good looking fake tree, because last year I was stressing out over him playing with the baubles and then having to hoover up all the needles that inevitably fell off the tree as a result. It's so nice not to have to worry about that this year and the tree looks as good as a real one. And last year's real one didn't even smell so it was all of the hassle of a real tree without any of the benefit!

Thanks for replies everyone - there are some lovely felt and wooden ones around - I think I might embrace the mismatched look which is a far cry from my previous grown up scheme!
Don't really have the space for a second tree anywhere as the one DH has bought is huge this year but I can see that being a cunning plan in the future.
Realistically I can justify spending a bit this year as I have DD at 2.5 and a lively 5 month old - so I have a few years ahead of me where this will be an issue!
Am browsing now!

M&s have some nice felt Xmas trees etc. We bought some today. They also had some nice glass snow globe ones which I was contemplating buying until our 20 month old smashed one - oh the shame Shock

mummybare · 10/12/2013 12:54

We also have posh glass decorations up high and normal baubles at the bottom. Everything is still nice and colour co-ordinated as DD is only 19mo so hasn't yet started ruining it creating her own masterpieces.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 10/12/2013 13:00

We have never adapted for the DC, tree is up on a chair.

Teladi · 10/12/2013 13:07

We actually didn't bother putting up the tree last year!! Terrible, I know. DD was little and had no impulse control!

This year she is 27 months and is allowed to give the lower ornaments 'gentle touches', and so far isn't that fussed about doing that anyway.

notsomuchroomattheinn · 10/12/2013 13:13

Not got it up yet, have a meddling just (yesterday!) 3 year old and a 20 month old Xmas Hmm
Hoping to get one at the weekend, DD 13 and DS1 are pestering incessantly about it!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/12/2013 13:13

We've just taught ours not to touch, in combination with having the glass and other breakable ones mostly higher up.

I have found that once you get past the first 2 or 3 days then they leave the tree alone as the novelty has worn off.

kiwidreamer · 10/12/2013 13:13

I haven't got any fancy glass baubles --too clumsy myself let alone kids-- so we've built up a lovely collection of felt / decoupage / rustic / fabric decorrations and it still looks lovely. DC have a 3ft tree upstairs which displays all their salt dough / homemade decorations without me feeling guilty for not letting them put them on the fancy tree!

cravingcake · 10/12/2013 13:13

Our 6 ft tree has 300 lights as 2yo DS loves them (always pointing at them in shops etc) and looks like Strictly Come Dancing Christmas has thrown up all over it as there are so many bright coloured glittery baubles as again these are what my DS seems to like the look of.

I'm also 33 weeks pregnant and dont care anymore so long as DS is happy and i dont have to tell him off every 3 seconds worrying that the lovely glass breakable decorations i have collected over the years and are staying firmly in their box until next year, possibly longer are being destroyed.

TwoThreeFourSix · 10/12/2013 13:13

DS is 2.3 years. He handed me all of 3 baubles when I was decorating then got bored and went to play with his trains.

I said to DH I was Sad because we're expecting DS2 and obviously I will never get any help decorating the tree Grin

But, DS is not really interested in touching the tree so we have ordinary stuff on it. he's pulled a couple of baubles but stopped when told to. He's more interested in the lamenta, which I dont' mind him getting his hands on.

kiwidreamer · 10/12/2013 13:15

DD is 2.6yrs and has had a few little curious touches but is fine mostly, as she was last year, when my DS was just 2yrs we put the tree in a play pen just in case Xmas Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/12/2013 13:16

Not a lot. The baubles that I thought were plastic were actually glass and i've just hoovered them up Hmm. She is systematically taking it apart piece by piece.
