Family present £100

We're in the lucky position of being gifted £100 as a family and want to buy something specific for us all rather than see it swallowed up in general spending. DC are 6 and 10, we already have a Wii and a (shared) tablet. Looked into theatre tickets but round here they're either panto or considerably more than the £100 budget. I've agreed to come up with two or three ideas to put to the family vote. Any suggestions?

Is there enough to get you all a magazine subscription each? Then the gift lasts all year.
Family membership to NT / EH if you are local to a few places?
A day out doing something different? Ski lessons / ice skating?

cinema and dinner out.. that could easly take the £100.. cinema is expensive these days? could be a nice thing to do on christmas eve?

trip to the zoo?

weekend break away in the new year?

going to a big shopping centre and splitting it 3/4 ways?

Entry to a Theme Park.

Premium bonds!

Seriously lock it away and let it grow, you never know you might win the one million jack pot and if you dont it is sitting there growing quietly.

I would book a cheap weekend away say in April, you can get some cheap hotel deals this time of year (try Groupon) something nice you can all look forward to.

National Trust - loads of free days out (if you take a picnic) and family friendly too. Lots of historic houses but also lots of woods/parks etc. we use ours throughout the summer...

I think membership to a place would be lovely. I think the idea of going to cinema christmas eve with dc and having meal afterwards would be lovely and christmassy.

Without a doubt I would get National Trust membership but then we live close to a few places.

Otherwise Premier Inn rooms are £25 at the moment for a family room sleeping 4. I would perhaps look at a city break somewhere, maybe Cardiff for the Dr Who exhibition?

Put it towards a tent - could pick up a nice second hand one on ebay or look around for any out of season bargains ...

I like Squeaky's suggestion of a magazine subscription each.
Or tickets to the Harry Potter Studio Tour maybe?

LeBearPolar · 08/12/2013 16:10

National Trust membership, definitely.

mrspremise · 08/12/2013 19:00

Premium Bonds are unlikely to grow at all in the current financial climate

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 08/12/2013 19:02

Thanks, all, lots of great ideas. DH and I would love a NT membership but I have a sneaking feeling DC will be far more excited about the idea of the Harry Potter studio tour, which is an inspired suggestion! Off to search for cheap hotels in Watford.

Just bear in mind that the £100 you have will just cover the cost of the gift shop vist after the tour (and you do exit through the gift shop - no way of avoiding it!) - make sure you've budgeted extra to cover hotels and actually getting into the studios Grin
