We're having PIL and SIL with family for Christmas dinner this year. Between our kids and theirs that will be 5, aged 9, 7, 3, 2 and 6mo. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a game or small presents to keep the kids amused during Christmas dinner so that it can be a bit more relaxed and fun for everyone asking the impossible? something not too boisterous to avoid glasses being knocked over etc. Any ideas?

What about A game like headbandz? Draw some christmassy pictures (tree, snowman, candy cane, present etc) on a post it note. Stick one to each forehead and try to guess what the picture is.

Or a pass the parcel with all your leftover wrapping paper. No big prize but a small chocolate in each layer?

Or the yes-no game. Each person is asked a series of questions and mustn't answer with yes or no.

Paperchase sell tiny boxes of cards with random games in them. We had some charades for the smaller children with pictures of animals. The adults loved these too. Older versions were fun "talk about" type cards. Equally fun and had quite a few bizarre discussions.

Get some Christmas crackers that contain wind up racing toys. Tesco currently have some - 6 crackers for £6 - containing wind up santas and reindeers. We've also had racing sprouts (can't remember where those were from though).

Ooh thanks for the ideas. I like the racing toy idea, might just have to clear the glassware out the way first!
