Second hand is fine in this house.
Given the choice between a second hand high quality item which has and will last, and a cheaper new item which is less likely to be robust, I'd go for the second hand one; and have done, with dolls houses, bikes, playmobile, electronics.
This year ED is getting a reconditioned professional laptop rather than a similarly priced new starter model.

Dd1 is getting 2nd hand this year, mainly because the item she has asked for is no longer made, we often buy 2nd hand as it saves money and so many toys get chucked away in landfill ( so I like to think we have saved something from being chucked away).

I have no problem with secondhand, neither does DH! We look for clean, well looked after items and look for brands that are out of our price range brand new.

Both dc are having a secondhand gift this year - they wanted a laptop (as the pc they use was very old and very slow) so we've carefully hunted and found good quality, well looked after secondhand laptops that DH is sorting out for them.

Both dc know that sometimes secondhand can work out better/cheaper than new and are not bothered at all (they are 9 and 11), they both look for secondhand items as well as new when saving money up for something and we help them choose the best item for their money. They've had secondhand gifts for Christmas before and have always been well received, in fact the little tikes playhouse, kitchen, slide and rocker were sold on for other "secondhand" Christmas gifts!

I have no problem with getting second hand. There was another thread about it yesterday www.mumsnet.com/Talk/Christmas/1547823-would-you-or-do-you-buy-your-children-second-hand-toys-for-xmas

I don't see any problem getting second hand for anyone, I'd be willing to accept it myself. I would obviously only look for well looked after things but I don't see any issue with it if it's something you know someone will love

My dc both got a second hand Nintendo DS each, one the new ones came out the old ones were going for peanuts. They wouldn't use the new features anyway and this way I could afford to get them one each. Second hand DVD's, video games and board games too, usually from Amazon as their descriptions of the condition of the items are usually spot on.
