Door wreath disaster :-(

I bought the most beautiful door wreath yesterday from the florists, it is the first 'real' one I've ever had and was simply stunning (expensive too- £35!).

Having done my research beforehand I purchased one of those 3M Command hook things as I've got a composite door and the over door hangers would either not fit or stress the seal. Stuck the hook up, left it for 1 hour as per instructions and then hung the wreath.

At 3am I awoke to a loud bang. Ran downstairs and opened door, hook has come straight off the door and wreath is shattered into about 50 pieces. I know it's pathetic but I'm gutted!

I called the florist this morning and told her what happened, and asked if she could sell me one of the heart shaped foam things so I can try to re-create it. So I am picking that up later on school run.

This in itself is going to be a catastrophe as I have the creative knowledge of a goldfish (I was rather hoping the nice lady would take pity on me and offer to do it for me, but sadly not).

If I do manage to restore to even a quarter of it's former glory, how the devil am I going to hook it up? There's nothing to attach some string/ribbon to on the inside of the door. The wreath is really heavy that's the problem. I do have a door knocker at the front, I thought of somehow creating a little shelf coming off of it to hang it on, but with what? How strong is garden wire?

Hopefully someone wise will have the answer for me............... Thanks

How strong is garden wire? That depends how thick the wire is! I'd have thought you might be ok with 2mm diameter stuff... Depends on how heavy it is though! Sorry that's not very helpful, is it?!

I'm also in a wreath creating nightmare!

Garden wire comes in lots of thicknesses up to that green plastic covered wire used for fencing. Is it possible to hang the wreath next to the door, is there a hanging basket bracket or something that you could hang the wreath from? Failing that, drill a hole in the brick and insert a masonry rawl plug, and a strong screw to which you can wire the wreath.

The foam rings are very heavy when soaked in water and loaded with foliage. If the holes created by the stems have been spoiled by the catastrophe, you won't be able to use them again to replace the foliage as they will be too slack and the sprigs will just drop out again. So the best course of action is to use a new base and try to re-create it as you say. Not meaning to be unsympathetic, but this is one of the busiest times in a florists year, so she probably hasn't the time to spare to help you, and it isn't her problem that it fell off because the hook wasn't strong enough.

If you are anywhere near me I would offer to help, (I've got City and Guilds,) I'm in north Herts.

We have an over the door wreath hook, something like this. They sell them all over, I've seen them in asda and wilkinsons for a couple of pouinds.

There are loads of online tutorials for wreath making, so if I would lay all of your salvaged bits of wreath out on the table to see what you have to work with, then watch how they make them.

Hopefully that will give you a bit of an idea how to put it back together.

I tied ribbon (good quality thick) to the wreath base before I began adding the decoration. When completed I stapled (using a staple gun) the ribbon to the top of my wooden front door. I used about four staples and when removed you will never know it had been there. Good luck.

No idea how to remake the wreath but I have a hook stuck to the inside of my door upside down so the ribbon on my wreath goes over the top of the door and the hook holds it on. Not sure if that's a clear explanation!

Thesimplethings · 03/12/2013 19:36

I've no idea what the solution is but I'm cheekily marking my place for the answer.

We have a brand new front door and I've no idea how to hang a wreath on it without permanently damaging the door Hmm

I have a hook on the inside too very near the top. I use a bit of ribbon to hang it from over the door. Looks great. I reuse the same hole in the door every year. It's not noticeable it's up so high.

I had exactly the same problem 3 years ago - I feel your pain. My Christmas wreath is my big indulgence and I though I had secured it on 2 metal wreath hangers. However, the wreath was so heavy the metal bent and my wreath fell and shattered - 4pm Christmas Eve so no chance of a replacement. Since then I have invested in 2 more metal wreath hangers which have cut out shapes on the long piece and I use industrial cable ties to go round the wreath and through the holes so the weight is supported. This definitely works! I hope I haven't confused you - I can try to send photos to help

I don't know how to load photos but they are on my profile
