Nightmare re 6 yr-old DD. Thought I was finished...

I'm having that experience, for real, that I sometimes have a nightmare about - that I've forgotten to get my daughter a Christmas present! I have got stocking presents, and a 'Trixie skateboarding pup' from Father Christmas (not what I would normally consider, but...) but I've just realised that we haven't got anything for her from us. She has expressed an interest in several plasticky princessy fairy things (note to self: stop her watching tv with adverts...) but I'd like to get her something nicer, and maybe more lasting. She's quite a clever girl, with a good reading age for her age (oh, I've got several books for her stocking) but she's kind of innocent - she isn't in to iPods or tablets or One Direction etc. I'm thinking about art materials, but could do with some inspiration. Thanks! Smile

What about fimo? You can get some sets with steps to follow to make specific things, but also some packs of different colours so she can use imagination. We got this for DD about 3 years pago (now 10) along with a box to keep it in plus a book from amazon with some more easy to make things. She played with it non-stop for ages, and got all her friends into it. She still gets use out of it now (we have obviously topped up on the clay) although less frequently - uses it for school projects etc.

Try and get Fimo soft for younger DCs, the standard one is hard work.

Another vote for the pretend school. Bought for DD when in reception and its still the thing she always plays with when friends come round (now y2).
Another favourite is her glockenspiel.

My DD has asked for John Adams Super Grafix, Gelarti and Glitzy Globes this year (Won't get all 3 though)

B&M have a very similar school set for £6.99 Smile

More great suggestions - thank you. (Feeling almost relaxed enough to eat a mince pie, and maybe even watch Love Actually.)

Amazon have some nice looking wooden table easels at really good prices at the moment - something like tht, maybe with some art paper, paintbrushes, paints or pastels, maybe a little person mannequin to help woth drawing?

Hulababy · 03/12/2013 19:50

DD had that school set - she loved it.
I took it into school for my Y2 class last year, as DD had grown out of it. They loved it - and this year's class are just the same.

"Melissa and Doug" is really good, I like their range. Not sure where it's available near to you but if you can get, its quite high quality stuff.

Other thought might be a stamping set to go in a big "kit"? Ink pads, stamps etc.

HaBumbug · 03/12/2013 21:06

some schleich or papo fairy or unicorn figures?

really nice, quality figures.

Bumbez · 03/12/2013 21:13

When dd was 6 I bought her an old school desk , and chair for £10 from the local paper, painted it pink and filled it with craft supplies. She's 8 now and still uses it.

We house swapped recently and the family had stacks of playmobil my girls aged 7 and 5 played for hours! Am getting one playmobil pet shop the other playmobil swimming pool planning not to see much of them on Christmas Day...

GinGirl · 03/12/2013 21:19

sleepymother I could have written your post! But I hadn't forgotten DD1, just do not know what to get her. She had a birthday a couple of months ago so doesn't need anything.
Grandparents are getting her craft stuff, we have oceans of playmobil (which she plays with but we haven't room for more).
Will investigate that school set, though she doesn't really need any more encouragement to boss/organise her younger siblings!

I was having the same problem with my DD - 7 years old and all she wanted was some pens. 2 hours as a junior zookeeper for £60 - perfect.

Though loving the school set too....

sleepymother · 03/12/2013 23:40

Fishfingers - we did a junior zoo keeper experience for her last birthday. She absolutely loved it! I'm sure your DD will too. I love some of these ideas - like Bumbez's desk. I had an old school desk with a lift-up lid when I was little. I'd completely forgotten about it until now, but I loved it. I wonder if I could find one...
