Film for Christmas Day...

Our 'post Santa' family tradition has been a film on Christmas afternoon. Struggling to find something this year. It has to suit DP, me, DD 16 and DM in late 70s (so no graphic sex or swearing! ) doesn't have to be Christmassy. Can't begin to list all the films we've seen so apologies in advance if you make suggestions and I say we've seen it. We do watch films more than once but prefer this one to be new to us. Nothing too heavy, and don't have to be 'adult' ie Toy Story type would be fine. Thanks

My two favourite christmas films are Bad Santa although has a bit of swearing and Dr Zhivago

ProfondoRosso · 02/12/2013 17:42

I'm sure you'll have seen it, but Home Alone is always my favourite Christmas film. I still crack up at it after all these years! Grin

Or Bringing Up Baby? That's a great all-rounder.

Bad Santa on Christmas day would just be wrong.

Isn't Life Is Beautiful a bit depressing for Xmas day?

Elf - surely!

lilolilmanchester · 02/12/2013 21:12

Wow, so many responses, thank you!!! We have seen a lot of those suggested, but there are some we haven't, will investigate. Should have said, DH doesn't 'do' period dramas, but a thinking a girlie afternoon with DD and DM sometime between Christmas and New Year. Whoever mentioned midnight in Paris .... Seen it and loved it. Would watch it again but my Mum wouldn't 'get' it.

I love a Christmas Eve scary film (not a horror but something like "The Turn of the Screw" - though I watched that with my parents Blush or "Crooked House" )

On Christmas Day we try to guess what the Big Film will be.
Can't abide Bond and I've noticed they're starting to re-run Harry Potter so I reckon a HP film will feature.

For me, a Christmas Day film needs to be Christmassy.

"Love Actually"
"Lost Christmas"
would be two of mine.

--But I'll be too busy watching the rubbishy soaps that I haven't seen since August. And Dr Who in our house [tchwink]

TheSmallPrint · 02/12/2013 21:39

Elf! Funniest Christmas film ever.

Scuttlebutter · 02/12/2013 22:01

For a beautiful, girly film, that's a classic but also suitable for your DD and your DM, how about I Capture the Castle? It's beautifully made and true to the book (could be a good introduction to the book) for your DD. I'd also in the same vein recommend Persuasion or Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (funny, well made and uplifting, with some great performances) and also a lovely book. Smile Little Miss Sunshine is also a glorious black comedy about families and I think would work for most ages.
