Would love to do this after Christmas and have a look around London, with DS age 8, but am now re-thinking as wondering if London will be heaving?

London will be heaving as so many people are on holiday. I would avoid going in to Harrods as the sale will be on. I would go skating at Somerset House though - I work on Fleet Street and that end of town is fairly dead between Christmas and New Year. Skating will probably be busy but you can always head towards the City if you fancy somewhere quieter for lunch..

It will be busy but with a bit of planning it can be done. Do remember there will be tourists and dedicated sales shoppers around so it would have kicked off rather than died down.
You will be within 10-15 mins walking distance of:
Covent Garden - walk down from Somerset house towards Trafalgar Sq & cross the road when you see the Lyceum Theatre (Lion King). Walk up the road that the Lyceum is on ( Bow St) & you'll find yourself in Covent garden. Better to see the lights there than in Harrods.

Norwegian Christmas Tree - Trafalgar Square
Walk down from Somerset House towards Trafalgar Sq, its a 10 min walk & you will pass Charing Cross st

Galleries around Trafalgar Sq - lots to do & see. Nice to have a loo stop in the gallery

Snacks - cross the road from the National Portrait Gallery & Trafalgar to visit St. Martins in the field cafe in the basement (much cheaper than the gallery cafe). The basement is accessible from street level by a glass lift & stair case.

Oxford St Lights - take the 73 bus from the Trafalgar sq side of the road alongside the fountain. That bus goes straight down Oxford St towards Victoria St.

I would just concentrate around that area instead of heading west towards Harrods.

St Martin in the Fields Church

Sounds great. Will be beautiful. Book the skating in advance then go to Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square as suggested. Forget Harrods, it's a) shit and b) miles away. Grin
