How do you make & bake Saltdough? I tried a recipe last year but it was a disaster & I ended up throwing it all away. Some of it burnt & some didn't cook properly.

You can do it in the microwave.

1.Mix half a cup of salt, half a cup of water, whole cup of flour.

  1. If using food colouring, divide and add now.
  2. Roll out on a floured surface, cut out your shapes.
  3. Lay them on a flat surface and microwave for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Leave to cool and harden.

Oh God I did this last year to entertain DS1 - they were awful. Not to admit defeat I was still insistent on painting them, threading them and hanging them.

They looked bloody dreadful and I was horrible and said DS1 did them at nursery. Blush Shame

This year we've done bread decorations. Buy a cheap loaf of thick sliced bread (the very reduced slightly stale stuff works best).

Cut out shapes and put hole in. Leave to go hard.

Paint with a mix of paint and pva glue

Put on more glue and cover with glitter

Glen, does it not go mouldy? Sorry for daft question but intrigued.

Rootvegetables · 02/12/2013 08:28

I did it last year but we didn't cook them just left them to dry near a radiator and painted and then did a pve layer aswell.

Thanks for all the tips. Going to do them tomorrow with the girls I nanny. I did the microwave one last year with no success but I think I used 1 cup salt, 1 cup flour & 1/2 cup water so could be where I went wrong!

The bread doesn't go mouldy because the moisture is removed then its sealed with glue.

Stupid question alert - plain flour or self raising?? Xmas Blush

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 03/12/2013 13:00

And another = do you paint, leave to dry and then pva??

NannyWaines13 · 03/12/2013 18:47

Plain flour in Saltdough. I'm going to paint & use glitter then cover in PVA glue to seal in the glitter.

We made some today but they went a bit puffy (didn't have plain flour so used past its sell-by date bread flour!)

We'll be painting them tomorrow. The grandparents will love them no matter what they look like Grin

Thanks - we made some this afternoon. Nearly set the kitchen on fire though, they were burnt black and the microwave was smoking after 3 minutes.

Just going to let them dry out over the next day or so i think!

NannyWaines13 · 03/12/2013 22:46

I didn't do mine in the microwave from past experiences. I did it in the oven on 100c for 2 hours & they came out brilliantly.
