Help! What do I buy for a 2yo?

Godson is 26 months. We have a small-ish (£10-20) budget to buy his Christmas present. I'm finding it difficult because I don't really know what kids that age like, plus he already seems to have lots of toys!

I was thinking maybe something creative (think paints, beads, clay - is he too young for that sort of stuff?) or else a really fun book?

What does your 2yo like? Any advice welcome!

My son at that age loved mega blocks. He still does at 3. He liked books, esp the touch an feel ones like the "that's not my...." ones. He wasn't into creative things at that age, an still isn't really. That could be just my son, he has the attention span of a fly.
Fireman Sam and Thomas the tank were popular, and I think he discovered Peppa pig around then.

How about a wooden trainset? Tesco do brilliant sets for £12 and £15, it wouldn't even matter if he already had one because he could just add to it. The more track and trains you have the better it is.

They are very popular with children at Stay and Play and will grow with him.

A book as suggested, with a touch element to it. I expect he's got the very hungry caterpillar but toddlers love putting their fingers through the holes. Or one with different textures.

A xylophone. Combines hammer ( great toy, if in plastic) and sound.

A small soft ball to kick, like a mini football.

Putting three of those together should cost less than 10 pounds.

And put them in a box. The box may be the biggest hit of all.

One of the Wow toys vehicles. DS has consistently loved his since 18mo and still plays with them now at 3.5yo. Bumpety Bump Bernie and the Turbo Twins were particular favourites that are currently on amazon for prices in your budget. He loved Dexter the Digger too - might be worth monitoring on camelcamel to see if it comes down a bit in price.

My nearly 2 and a half year old loves drawing and colouring, Playmobil 123 (and her big sister's normal playmobil) her wooden train set, dressing up, stickle bricks, jigsaws, simple board games, her tea set and play food, her teddies. Books.

Also agree that 26mo is a bit early for creative stuff. We got DS a load of paint etc for last Christmas and he's really only started asking to play with it in the last couple of months. Of course, that might just be DS...

On the book front, Choo Choo Clickety Clack and Dig Dig Digging are great if he's at all interested in vehicles

I would say any duplo or happyland sets. Wooden train set is also a good idea (i like the ikea ones, they are very reasonable). Toy food was very popular with dd1 at that age too (the wooden Melissa and Doug food groups set is ace and within your budget on Amazon) as was her animal torch.

I would say 26 months is a little old for the 'that's not my...' books, and to look out for books with more of a story. My dd liked Julia Donaldson at that age a lot, also anything by Judith Kerr or Shirley Hughes. Another one to look at is Gallop by Rufus Seder - it's a clever book where the pictures move as you turn the pages.

Sorry, just looked again at your budget and I think the Melissa and Doug car transporter or take along tool kit (both on Amazon) are lovely wooden toys
