who always gets me fabulously appropriate presents, and who is impossible to buy for.

So far I have a book & game which will both be 'family' presents, but at least something for him to open. But I would love to get him a really nice present.

In the past I've done clothes (but he has just re-vamped his wardrobe so doesn't need anything new) and books (really not reading much right now as very busy). His main hobby is singing which is no bloody help as all you need for that is some more people and the piano for practice which we have. We have such different tastes in music that my attempts at cds have always been pretty unsuccessful.

Have a look at firebox.com, there are some interesting things on there.

I am getting DP a couple of CDs, gloves that still let you use touchscreen phones and maybe a sort of fiendishly difficult wooden cube puzzle or similar, he likes having something to keep him busy on Xmas and boxing day.

How about: sushi making kit, new wallet, a book about a composer he likes, a hamper of all his favourite food/drink things?

What about a week in Finland this summer for a festival of coaching about early music, complete with vocal masterclasses?

I guess it's a bit more than 50 pounds, but looks interesting!

I was once given a beautiful handmade wooden music stand. I still love it. It has a ratchet mechanism and is just lovely.

Being in the far west of Wales you probably have a wonderful view of the stars. How about a telescope?

The music stand is a really good idea, I will check that out, telescope also a good thought.

The course looks amazing and would be absolutely his thing but a bit over budget I'm afraid!

I am PMSL at the rugby tickets, sorry Grin

Have you got a cinema nearby? There are some that show live screenings of theatre shows every now and then. I've got tickets for WarHorse for DH, it'd be a right expense palaver to see it in London but for £25 we can go and see it down the road instead.
