Anyone keeps a real Christmas tree in a pot?

We buy a real Christmas tree every year and it always makes me a bit sad when I have to chuck it out after the holidays not to mention the cost of buying a new one every year
I would really like to get one in a pot this year and try and keep it alive to re-use over the coming years. However, all the labels on the trees I've seen so far recommend that you plant it in your garden after using it. As ve only have a small yard and no actual garden, this is not really an option for me, so I was wondering, has anyone tried to keep their tree in a pot and just bring it in the house for a couple of weeksevery year? Does it keep well/grow?
Thanks :)

I have two in pots, small ones, two feet high approx, maybe a little more. They live out all year round and come in for a (short) while at Christmas. I have been lucky with these two though. The previous ones all died but these are 4 and 3 years old now.

They live on the patio and I water them in very dry weather or if there is any sign of brown needles in summer but on the whole they require no attention.

Both have grown several inches and got bushier. They seem to be slightly different varieties, but one is certainly a typical 'usual' type of Christmas tree, with the piney dropping needles.

Hope it works for you!

I've tried this a couple of times. They have all died pretty quickly.

We had one in a pot which lasted a few years until we finally moved and planted it in the garden.

I would really like a large potted tree so that we can plant it in the garden afterwards but the tallest seems to be about five foot and we have a seven foot tree usually.

Thanks for the quick replies!
writingquestion we also usually have a 6-7 foot tree, I wouldn't mind getting a smaller one this year though if there was a chance of it growing a bit over the next few years!
applesinmypocket that sounds good, although they are still quite a bit smaller than what I was hoping for in the long run...

It takes a long time to grow a tree. The ones in pots have probably got to the size required before harvesting. If you want a tree to grow, it would need to be in a very large pot or in the ground to allow the roots to grow as well. You would probably need to 'feed' it with some sort of plant food, and there would be no guarantee of it avoiding diseases that affect conifers and similar trees.

I have a tree that's about 5ft. We have used it for 2 christmases so far.
We are thinking of planting it now. We can get a bigger tree now we've moved house.
But could probably use it this year too otherwise. One bit of one branch has gone brown. So probably wouldn't last another year in the pot.
