Dd age 9 already has a Nintendo 3ds a Google nexus and a Wii.

My mil wants me to buy a gift for her with this as my budget. I don't want to get lots of little things as I will end up using up all my ideas for xmas and we don't have 120 quid to spend !

I've asked dd and she keeps coming up with little cheap things like socks.
Mil wants me to get her something extravagant ????

Ooh yes a lovely desk

Another vote for show tickets. Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are both great. Buy a memory not just more stuff she'll get bored with or outgrow.

I'd go for an experience too - tickets for a show would be great.

extravagant doens't have to mean gadgets/tech.

does she have a favourite book? you could suggest a first edition, or a posh limited run? or start off collecting somethign like the antonia forest books - out of print and only likely to increase in value.

check out ice rinks near you - mine does a lessons +skates package which I would have killed for at that age (and actually asked dh for a couple of years ago, but then got pregnant, so that scuppered that).

experience days, as other posters have said.

or a theatre trip or concert.

the world is bigger than gadgets.

The games for those consoles she has are expensive - so a few of those?

My DD1 was a zoo keeper for a daunting when she was 9 and loved it. She cleaned out an animal enclosure, hid food for the animal, held some smaller reptile type animals (snake, bearded dragon) and got to stand right next to a tiger (in its cage but she could have touched it). I think it cost £65 for the day and included food.

For her 12 birthday next month i Smyths hoping to get her tickets to see the Lion King. It is on in January/February so only cheap tickets right at the back left.

I'd go with experience day or day out.

jewellery could be a good option, that way its a bit like money in the bank if you go for good quality gold but still nice.

or annual membership to somewhere or magazine subscription etc. Or what about tickets to a show? could get top seats for a london performance for that and if she hasnt been she will love it!
