How many fairy lights to a tree?

For a 4-5 foot tree, on average, how many fairy lights do you use?

We usually end up using 4 plugs worth sets, in a round and round fashion. I have no idea how many lights that is, so am tempted to buy this so that we can plug the telly in as well.

Has anyone measured? Surely someone has A Spreadsheet?

We have a 6 foot tree usually and have a fire hazzard 10 sets of lights.

We have a 6ft tree and only have one set of 100 lights! They are colourful and twinkly. My mum always has about 6 sets - I wouldn't have enough plugs!!

FriskyHenderson · 27/11/2013 13:29

I don't have enough plugs, I try to do it on a 4 way and hide it. So are we thinking 100 is not enough?

There are lights that you can buy as many strings as you need and they connect to one another, thus only needing one plug for the lot. I don't know if they are for inside or outdoor use.

I like the old fashioned tree lights (non LED) and find 100 lights plenty for my 5.5 ft tree. I wouldn't know where to start with LED's as there are so many different types and levels of brightness.

We have a 6 foot tree and a single set of 512 tiny lights. It's lovely.

VesuviusPoovius · 27/11/2013 16:29

Crazy any idea where you got that from?

newfavouritething · 27/11/2013 16:48

We have a 10' tree and two sets of long lights, probably about 40m total length, not sure of actual number of lights.

TeaAndSconesTwice · 27/11/2013 16:51

We have a 7 foot tree with 200 lights, it looks lovely.

storminabuttercup · 27/11/2013 17:28

Amazon have loads of fairy lights going up to strings of 700. I have two sets and dread untangling them from the tree each year

Cascumpec · 27/11/2013 17:34

If you are my husband, then there should be a minimum of 167 billion, preferably LED, so the glare will incinerate your eyeballs should you happen to glance in the direction of the tree.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/11/2013 17:53

As many as possible :)

oopsadaisyme · 27/11/2013 18:02

We've got fairy lights everywhere in our front room!! Over the fireplace, over the mirrors, dangly ones from the ceiling lol!!

Haven't even got the tree up yet, but fairy lights are fab!!! Gwen I'm with you, as many as poss x

B&Q had a handy guide in store which may be on their website. For our 6ft tree I think te recommendation was 400.

cocolepew · 27/11/2013 18:08

About 1-2 million usually is enough.
I even have the outdoor icicle lights on mine Blush. Around three different sets of chasers/flashing.
My dad has epilepsy and says hes scared to look at it for too long Grin.

CrazyOldCatLady · 27/11/2013 19:46

Vesuvius, I know exactly where I got them - and when! It was Homebase, exactly 10 years ago : )

VesuviusPoovius · 27/11/2013 20:08

I found some 500 ones on Amazon, lots of 5 and a few 1 reviews - unfortunately those were of the 'came home and found the house on fire so I'd have to give this 1*' type reviews Shock

newfavouritething · 27/11/2013 22:29

We have lights everywhere at Christmas - such a contrast to now where I go around switching lights off!

ImNotReallyHere · 27/11/2013 22:34

I think it depends where u put a tree. If u put at the window I would say 200. We put in a corner so only need lights on half a tree. 100 is plenty and we have 7ft. Last year I bought some disastrous led ones that stopped working after 5 days and couldn't take off as has already put up all Xmas decs and tinsel - bought 100 normal lights in tesco today for £3 half price. At that price u could buy 2 just to be sure and still have £14 to spend on other Xmas stuff

girlywhirly · 28/11/2013 07:52

I'm with you on that, ImNotReallyHere. Our lights came from Argos, cheap and effective and usually last a few years! Why waste money?

happy2bhomely · 28/11/2013 21:25

We have a 7ft tree with 600 warm white led lights. It looks perfect, like the one in Home Alone 2. Red and gold and sparkly. They cost £50 from The Range. I prefer old style lights, but I worry about the heat from them.

CiderwithBuda · 28/11/2013 21:30

Put lights up and down rather than round. It's hoe they do the tree at the Rockefeller Centre in New York. Works well.
