I have a secret hankering for those Christmas 'village' type ornaments but can't decide whether they're a bit naff or not?

Have always had some weird kind of fascination with these, keep getting drawn to them in garden centres, etc. The sensible side of me says they're kind of naff looking but I do covet a whole village around the Christmas tree, am thinking something like this. I reckon if I bought one a year then I might have a whole village by the time the DCs are adults!

Anyone got any?

I love them, so pretty and cosy looking

wannabedomesticgoddess · 24/11/2013 19:15

I love them, but we don't really have anywhere to put them so haven't bought any.

I guess they are a bit tacky but I really do love them.

Rubybrazilianwax · 24/11/2013 19:18

They are sweet. Who wants tasteful christmas anyway! Out garden centre has a gorgeous big piece with an ice rink and little skaters that move to music.

usualsuspect · 24/11/2013 19:20

Oooh they are lovely a bit naff.

Lollydaydream · 24/11/2013 19:22

I do see the attraction, I think one or two at Christmas time would be lovely - but a whole village........

I find after I've been looking at Christmas ornaments in the volumes that they have in garden centres etc I find myself thinking I like stuff I'm sure I wouldn't normally. It's like exposure in sufficient quantities inures you to your usual taste. But maybe that's the fun of Christmas?

I confess to having similar thoughts regarding tea light houses in white china but I am going to go with three gingerbread houses instead.Grin

BumgrapesofWrath · 24/11/2013 19:27

I'm like you, really want to not like them but secretly love them! I may invest this year too!

trice · 24/11/2013 19:30

Christmas should be naff. I have all sorts of joyously tacky ornaments. I love a light up, musical, Christmas village, preferably with faux victoriana carol singing mice. I have a glittery, dancing, singing, flashing Christmas pudding. It is awesome.

Crikeyblimey · 24/11/2013 19:32

My sis has several and puts them on a medium sized table in her dining room at Christmas. She puts that sheet cotton wool stuff of the table first (to look like snow)!

They actually look fantastic and her grandchildren love them :)

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 24/11/2013 19:33

they are tacky
but so is Christmas
I have one and love it

usualsuspect · 24/11/2013 19:35

I have a fireplace shaped tea light holder with a chimney.

I can't wait to get it out.

SontaranForADestructiveStroll · 24/11/2013 19:36

I really like them too. In fact I hanker after them but have always been out off by the Hmm face that dh pulls.

In fact, I have bought coloured lights for the tree this year.

Gigondas · 24/11/2013 19:37

They are tacky as hell but I have a few one. Dh has been converted from loathing them to buying a new one. Kids love them especially the one with a train that moves and the one that plays music .

I will slink off now ...Blush

Amy106 · 24/11/2013 19:41

Why not? If you want one, I think you should go for it. Christmas should be about fun and secret wishes fulfilled. Smile

Guitargirl · 24/11/2013 19:42

Ah, so lots of closet 'tacky Christmas village' lovers on MN! I would never have known! Right, am convinced, I will purchase one or two this year. I like the look of the fake snow blanket too

Just looked on Amazon, you can get little lampposts and postboxes and all manner of lovely naff things.

3bunnies · 24/11/2013 19:56

I dd2 has made a light up model village to thwart dh's natural desire to ban all Christmas Villages!

BrianButterfield · 24/11/2013 19:57

DH and I both love them, but we have decided to wait until we're 'old' (as in grandparents) and then get them and be the grandparents who say "no, it's fine, he can touch them!" while our DC are freaking out about stuff getting broken!

Guitargirl · 24/11/2013 19:58

I have been looking on Amazon for snow blankets. Just asked DP how much of our living room a 3m blanket would cover. He's starting to look worried. Grin

That's pretty much the same thought I had when I first read the OP, and I even asked DP if he thought we would ever be able to buy our own house. I didn't tell him that the only reason for my enquiry was so I could have a fireplace and a sideboard specifically for such tat. :o

PoppadomPreach · 24/11/2013 20:13

I want one too. So wrong, but yet so right....

LegoAcupuncture · 24/11/2013 20:15

I so want one! Costco had an amazing one in a few weeks ago, went for it this weekend and it's no longer there :(

EverySingleWeek · 24/11/2013 20:21

Oh my goodness! I'd love one!! Infact, I was telling me sister as much, this afternoon! She was very Hmm

Our local garden centre burnt down last week and I feel so sad at all the Christmas things going up in smoke Sad...there is a whole list of other things that I feel sad about, too, when I think of the place burning down but not relevant to this convo. Only a week ago, I was looking longingly at a £60 one with a Ferris wheel.

EverySingleWeek · 24/11/2013 20:25

This was the other one I wanted
