How much veg to buy per person fo Christmas Dinner?

I'm sorting out our Christmas food shopping and trying to order enough, without going crazy. There will be 10-12 of us, including a 3 year old, the rest will be adults.

We are planning to do a traditional Christmas meal. So I am trying to work out what weight to get of:
Potatoes
Carrots
Brussel Sprouts
Parsnips

Any ideas please?

I actually do it by the handful rather than weight. One handful of each veg per person.

Experiment in the greengrocers to get an idea if you're not going to be picking your shopping yourself.

I usually do 3/4 roast potatoes each (so about 1 large potato each)
1 carrot each
Approx 5/6 sproats each as no-one wants any more
Approx 1/2 parsnip each (as not everyone will eat them).

We haven't got massive appetites though, but by the time we've got meat or fish, pigs in blankets, yorkshire pudds as daughter likes them) the plate is fullo.

We haven't got massive appetites compared to some.

I do one large potato each cut into 4 large pieces. I would do two medium sized carrots each. About 8 sprouts, with whole chestnuts, (although we have red cabbage with cranberries and peas). We love roast parsnips with maple syrup and whole grain mustard and I do 1 parsnip per person as they shrink. Depends on how much you eat, but I would not like to have empty veg dishes, so always do extra so second helpings are available.

Are you veg eaters? It makes a big difference. When I cook for my ILs I end up with mountains of left over veg and when I go there I end up politely taking my share of 2 carrots for the 8 of us.

For me I'd do
a potato each plus a few extras for left overs
a carrot each
6 sprouts each
1 parsnip each

For the ILs I'd do
potatoes as before
4 slices of carrot each
2 sprouts each
1 piece of parsnip each

The very best thing about Christmas dinner is loads of leftover veg for Bubble and Squeak on Boxing Day!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 25/11/2013 12:54

The veg is our favourite part!

I would do one medium sized carrot per person, 6 sprouts, and as mentioned handful of peas.

But I usually double up on roast potatoes and roast parsnips. So I would do 2 parsnips and 2 potatoes per person.

Mainly because DH saves himself all day for lunch and adores roast pots and snips.

Also they are a delicious cold accompaniment to a turkey/mayo/stuffing/cranberry doorstep later in the evening. (my favourite Christmas meal. )

i've got 7 people this year and decided to order M&S Luxury Vegetable Pack. Has anyone had this before and will it generously serve 7?

Thanks I think we normally do way more than suggested as we love leftovers. I'm still not sure about the weight of what we need to buy, which is sadly what we are buying based on. I'll go and have a look at what the weight of what we have in at the moment is and estimate based on how much that looks.

Ah I love my Christmas veg :)

For my OH and I - about 4 roasts each, a stack of mash (maybe 4-5 potatoes each) about 5 or 6 carrots (half roasted or half steamed) - about 4 parsnips, about 6-8 sprouts, half a cauliflower and some sweetcorn or peas depending on what the kids fancy as we can't get them to eat any of the above!

Plus I like to use a couple of carrots and a parsnip as a trivet for my meat and then they get mashed into the gravy.
