My DDs have just this week got really into the game Minecraft. From what I can see, it's just like building with lego but digitally.
What sort of merchandise is available for the game, and is there anything suitable for stockings for them? They are 8 and 9.

There is lots of stuff available, annuals, various books etc available on amazon and wh smiths. Lego have some minecraft sets too but they are ££.

Get used to tuning out the words 'on Minecraft...'. Grin

Thanks arch, wasn't sure if I was missing something really, had a look on amazon but just found a load of random figures of someone called Steve? and some lego sets. Have ordered a set for a joint present under the tree, not a stocking gift!

They're having a whale of a time on it right now, both on their kindles and finding each other playing hide and seek. It's so nice but at some point i'm going to have to turf them off of them. Sad really, it's quite peaceful with DS in bed Grin

There's lots on the Forbidden Planet website. It's a sci-fi shop.

It ALL costs loads. Those Steve figures are small, lightweight plastic and do nothing but cost a minimum of £22.

I'm crocheting minecraft scarves as I refuse to pay £20 for 1!

There's small figure packs that just came out in the last week and are around £8 which are stocking sized and won't make you weep when handing over your bank card. Grin

There are lots of stocking fillers stuff. All quite expensive. There was a fab thread recently on minecraft bits. Can't link because on phone, but have a search.

ProfYaffle · 24/11/2013 13:09

This lady will make a doll out of your minecraft skin. I haven't had it done but she did do some portrait dolls for us and they are amazing.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 24/11/2013 13:24

Thanks for the advice (I will search for that thread oblomov), it does all seem pricey for bits of tat. I don't buy things like figures as they don't get played with, therefore I think they're a total waste.
I am going to have a look on that website now.
Prof, I don't even know what a minecraft skin is!

I wouldn't bother wasting money on minecraft merchandise, what kids want to is actuallyplay minecraft!

Get them aPC edition as you can do loads more on it than with the pocket edition (or so my DS tells me)

ProfYaffle · 24/11/2013 13:31

The skin is basically their avatar, they design it themselves so they're unique to the user.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 24/11/2013 13:40

Yes, what OMDB said - it's about the play experience rather than "stuff", it doesn't have characters and it's so varied how you can play that there isn't a recognisable "thing".

The PC version is much better but you would need two computers for them to be able to play it together. You can't play multiplayer between a kindle/ipad/android and a computer.

OvO · 24/11/2013 13:40

This book is actually stocking sized. I thought it was more annual sized but it's not. Lots in it though and really good for newer players. There's a matching Redstone one coming out on the 5th of December.

It's been found in supermarkets for £4 and I think it's been that price too on amazon. But £5.75 isn't too bad either.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 24/11/2013 13:42

Oh the books actually, they are very good. But might be frustrating because not all of the components are available on the pocket edition.

overmydeadbody · 24/11/2013 14:13

DS said the book didn't have anything in it he didn't already know, but then he watched 'stampy' youtube tutorials all the time that give him the lowdown on the possibilities within minecraft.

I think even if they can't play it together the PC edition of Minecraft would be a good present for them, as you can build so much more than you can on pocket edition.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 24/11/2013 14:39

Bertie, they are interacting with each other on their kindles though, they seem to be having a nice enough time.
I just wondered if there might be anything to go in their stockings as they seem to taken with it. Those books look good, thanks Over.
Not going to get anything for the PC though, i'll never get on it myself! They really do seem to just like seeing chickens flying about Hmm

My ds picked up an annual the other day and couldn't put it down, haven't looked at it myself but it's on his Xmas list!

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 24/11/2013 15:37

I got a steve for £8 from the entertainer they had the others too, I paid £15 for an enderman and have got him the annual etc, my ds is 8.5

Oblomov · 24/11/2013 19:21

If he likes minecraft. Why not a t-shirt? Atleast his friends will know he likes it. May start up conversations. There was another thread on this, this week. Sorry for non linking.

trixymalixy · 24/11/2013 21:59

I've bought D'S the mine craft Lego from the actual Lego site. It's going for stupid money on amazon. He got the little handbook as a reward for a good parents night report. It's quite useful for new players.
