My DS is obsessed with maps etc. has anyone ever heard of maps for children or something similar I can get him for a Christmas gift?

Has he got any map jigsaws? Ravensburger and Orchard Toys do some that look nice.

I'm sure there's map-related project/activity type books available as well.

fuzzpig · 24/11/2013 08:03

saw this in waterstones the other day

Also I'm sure I read on here you can get personalised OS maps of your local area so that might appeal, though I don't know where they're from.

YellowDahlias · 24/11/2013 08:04

My brother is buying the book fuzzpig mentioned for my 4 year old DD. She's also interested in the idea of maps at the moment.

stickygotstuck · 24/11/2013 08:10

I second the Ravensburger puzzle suggestion. They are great. DD has one of UK and Ireland, one of Europe and one of the world. She's been asking for Africa for her upcoming 5th birthday!

Also, go to your local library, see if they have any free materials left from the European day of languages. We have a large, simple folding map with facts about all EU countries and a 'passport' with stickers of flags and all the different euro coins. DD loved hers.

TortillasAndChocolate · 24/11/2013 08:14

I used to have a childrens atlas when I was a kid which I loved. Something like that could be an option.

fuzzpig · 24/11/2013 08:20

Oh and a sticker atlas is a must if he hasn't got one already. My DD loves hers and we've been personalising it by writing relevant things on each country, like countries where her friends were born, where favourite characters are from, places we've been, stuff she's learned about in school etc.

raisah · 24/11/2013 08:58

Not quite what you asked for but here is a link to a kids tube map

Tractorandtree · 24/11/2013 09:02

This is a nice one from GLTC (think there's an MN link to get 15% off)

Or this one is more expensive but nice

My 6yr old has been obsessed by maps since forever. Charity shop local/anywhere maps have been perfect.

I feel like I could drive around any town/city in the Uk without any help now Grin

fuzzpig · 24/11/2013 09:06

Also he might enjoy this board game

Wigeon · 24/11/2013 09:09

Has he got a globe? My DD loves hers - you can switch it on so it lights up. Search 'illuminated globe' on Amazon. Thimk40 it was about £20. Makes loads of conversations about the world much more real.

fuzzpig · 24/11/2013 09:20

That Janod map is gorgeous. Oh for a spare £50 Envy

Tractorandtree · 24/11/2013 09:53

Oh I like that place mat fuzzpig, ds1 would love that, I think I'll get it for him.

OP, my ds (4.9) has the game that fuzzpig linked to and he enjoys playing it though we did have to adapt the rules to make it a bit simpler when he first had it.

jellyfl00d · 24/11/2013 17:08

Thanks there are some really good ideas, if anyone has anymore I'm still listening Grin

It's horribly expensive for what it is and my kids can take it or leave it but I love it and I love maps so a map-loving kid probably would as well.

Vicki1972 · 24/11/2013 18:00

We have the Travel the World game linked above and don't find it all that great.

The Great Game of Britain was my absolute favourite as a child although it is possibly a little bit old for a 4 year

youbethemummylion · 24/11/2013 18:07

How about making a map to show him where to find his Christmas presents. My parents did this one Christmas for us and actually had some presents in neighbours sheds etc so it was on a larger scale than just our house im 30 now and to me that was still the best christmas ever.

SpookedMackerel · 24/11/2013 18:19

Highly reccomend The Once Upon a Time Map Book.

fuzzpig · 24/11/2013 18:26

Oh that's lovely mackerel - perfect for DD as we are currently reading Peter Pan!

MamaPizza · 24/11/2013 18:29

DS (also 4) has got this and it's lovely. Lots to discover, so many things to learn.

SpookedMackerel · 24/11/2013 18:57

Fuzzpig, it is a really lovely book, we don't have it, SIL has a copy and when we go to her house Dd runs to fetch it from the shelf. Her favourite is the Snow White map, but they are all brilliant, so much to look at.

fuzzpig · 27/11/2013 22:06

:)

Just popping back to add this - not quite maps exactly, but the see inside range is great for DCs as loads of flaps to lift. My two have dinosaurs, body and space and they are very engaging.

Sparrowsintheslipstream · 27/11/2013 23:30

Am loving these suggestions.

Also someone on a thread the other day linked to customised playmats on Etsy that I thought were wonderful here
