Christmas lights/torches for walk to carol session

We've got quite a few friends and their children coming round to ours for drinks and the plan is that we'll then walk from our house to the village to join in the outdoor carol session. I'd love to get the children some sort of Christmassy lights or cheap little child safe lanterns or something for the walk to the carols - any suggestions? Age range is 2 - 8.

I don't know about Christmassy lanterns, but Millets and camping shops do little battery powered lanterns which you could possibly decorate in some way.

The torches I found for my DC are from Poundland and are shaped like pigs and are dynamo ones.

Why not use those little tin lanterns that are every where for candles, but put one of the little battery powered tea lights in instead. I think matalan have pretty red lanterns with reindeer design

Thanks everyone. I like the pig dynamo torch for DD's stocking! Rubybrazilian, thanks - seen some nice little lanterns on Matalan's website.

I've just foundthese lanterns on the Ikea website for £2 each, and I'm going to Ikea on Friday...but would you let your 2 year old walk along the road carrying a lantern with glass panes in??

I guess I might be concerned that they might get a bit hot, so you would need a stick or something to hold them. You could get them to make papier mache lanterns in advance and then put battery operated tea lights or the ubiquitous MN finger lights inside.

Hmmm, thanks hadn't thought of the heat 3bunnies - I was thinking that the parents might be worried their children might trip, break the glass and cut themselves.

I had thought of buying paper lanterns, but the only Christmassy ones I could find worked out more expensive than the Ikea ones.

Might make some out of tin cans and get sticks for them to carry them.

Finger lights to light up the lanterns is genius.

Actually, thinking about it, would the tin lanterns get hot with battery operated tea-lights?

led lights are generally cool to the touch so I think it would be ok. I am in no way an expert so please google before handing to a toddler
