I'm stuck. Completely and utterly stuck!

OP posts:
DrHolmes · 23/11/2013 18:31

Right now I need help with my dad.

He is very intelligent and humerous likes gadgets but he has money so has everything really.

We are to spend £100. Need something good/clever/not seen before!

Shosha1 · 23/11/2013 18:31

A audio book a month from Audible.com, he is 85 and had a stroke in August ( we thought we had lost him) and cant get out much and it has affected his eyesight.

I will have to go and download from my laptop for him and put it onto cd's for him as he cant do that, but he so misses reading.

DrHolmes · 23/11/2013 18:33

Aw that is a great idea Shosha. God I am nearly in tears. xx

Cremolafoam · 23/11/2013 18:37

Dr H I got my parents a gift voucher for relais chateaux last year. Maybe something similar?
ici

JKSLtd · 23/11/2013 18:39

Not sure at all.

He likes gardening but has most things now.
Plays golf but ditto.
Reads a lot so some books always good, might see what new ones are on offer in town next week.

Doesn't really drink very much (prostate issues) so alcohol is a bit wasted on him.

Clothes? my Mum took him out recently and made him buy lots so none needed.

Food? he eats anything put in front of him so doesn't really have a favourite thing you can buy for him.

DrHolmes · 23/11/2013 18:41

Ohhh i like that cremola.

Might just book them somewhere, they live on the French Riviera and there's some places on that site nearby!

Thanks for that!

HesterShaw · 23/11/2013 18:59

Good idea about the CD. He used to love jazz. Well, still does I'm sure.

Shosha1 · 23/11/2013 19:01

FIL, we bought dinner at Gleneagles last year.

He said it was the best present he had ever had, it was such a fantastic experience.

PassTheBaileys · 23/11/2013 19:02

a next voucher and a dalek shower gel

BearsInMotion · 23/11/2013 19:03

Personalised map for Hester :)

lucysmam · 23/11/2013 19:08

personalised plectrum Just don't forget to click the gift option & specify your personalisation like I did if you order one Smile

AuditAngel · 23/11/2013 19:14

Star, I'm sitting here wearing the kermit socks from the muppet pack (I take an 8 and prefer to buy men's socks, especially to wear with boots)

I have bought my dad a book about the knights Templar.

BlinkQuenelle · 23/11/2013 19:23

I'm taking him and Mum to see Cleo Laine.

They don't want stuff any more.

FreshWest · 23/11/2013 19:29

My dad will be getting a trio of miniature Glenfiddich bottles as it's his fave tipple but i couldn't decide which age to go for. I let tesco make the decision instead Grin
Also, happily, as it's British & Irish Lions year then a book about that.

CMOTDibbler · 23/11/2013 19:35

My dad is getting another Andre Rieu DVD. God bless Andre though, as he gives dad so much pleasure and can be counted on for a couple of new DVDs a year.

Not everyone with dementia gets pleasure from music of their youth, or that they have previously enjoyed btw. My mum has gone off much of what she once loved, and the words of songs make no more sense to her than spoken words - it just depends what part of the brain are most affected.

HesterShaw · 23/11/2013 19:45

It's an odd beast, dementia.

Maybe we should start a specialist thread - "what to buy aged senile parents who don't actually know what they want anyway." Sigh....

:)

CMOTDibbler · 23/11/2013 19:48

I know. My mums getting a lap quilt. Last year it was a dressing gown as she could no longer work out how to put hers on Sad

catchingzeds · 23/11/2013 19:52

I'm baking my dad a Xmas cake and letting my boys decorate it! There really is nothing he wants/needs and I think he'll appreciate the thought and time spent on it.

JKSLtd · 23/11/2013 20:05

Thanks for the plectrum link - have ordered one for my FIL who plays.

(ps. I just put his name in the personalisation box, should I have done something different? Confused)

Lions book might be good for my Dad...

Felix90 · 23/11/2013 20:08

Dads are always hard to buy for! I'm making up a coffee hamper for mine. Two packs of Tassimo pods, metal pod holder, nice mug, bottle of Tia Maria and posh biscuits/fudge or something along those lines.

JKSLtd · 23/11/2013 20:13

Oooh yes, we bought him a Nespresso for his 70th in October, so could add some pods :)

And I haven't even started on brothers...got 2 of them, both of whom have tonnes more £££ than us, one of whom lives in a tiny flat that can't fit anything else, the other lives abroad and will be travelling as light as poss (as you can with 2 young DC anyway).

elspethmcgillicuddy · 23/11/2013 20:17

DrHolmes- if your budget is that much have you thought about the wifi kettle. Available on firebox.

For my FIL we have previously got the OS jigsaw around his postcode. He loved that.
This year we are getting him a book about all the men who went to the moon. It has had excellent reviews.

Purple2012 · 23/11/2013 20:18

My Dad is a nightmare to buy for. We don't spend a lot so I have got him a bottle of raspberry vodka as I had it on holiday and loved it and he said he had never seen it but wouldn't mind trying it. I will get something else just in case he doesn't like it.

lucysmam · 23/11/2013 20:18

JKS you did better than me. I totally forgot to fill out the personalisation box Blush and am still waiting to hear back from the seller as to whether they got my message with what I want writing, or need to cancel order and start again. I think I was just that thrilled to find something suitable for a change tbh Grin ...he and my sister are quite difficult to buy for.

Abzs · 23/11/2013 20:22

Something he won't buy himself, but needs - a new toaster.

Last year it was Indestructible Socks - same reason.
