I have an idea for an advent garland this year...What do you think??

Hi, this year I'm going to buy an advent garland for my nearly 9 year old daughter. In each pocket, I'd like to put a Christmas wish from each member of her family and some of her friends at school. She is just learning to sound out words, so this will encourage her to have a go at reading. I thought it'd be lovely for her in the run up to Christmas to think of her family and friends. And of course a chocolate! Grin
What do you think though? I know her family would be happy to do it, but what about her friends mums, do you think they'd find it annoying or odd to be asked? I was going to provide small pieces of coloured paper, cut into shapes with string attached so that she can hang them on her tree after we've read them.

Also, if anyone else has any ideas or traditions, I'd love to hear them. Smile

This is completely irrelevant but just wanted to say, I can't believe your DD is nearly NINE!!! Where did the time go?!

(Sorry that sounds stalkerish :o I used to be on the home ed boards, probably under a previous name)

That sounds nice, I don't suppose her friends parents will mind, 9 year olds are always writing notes of one sort or another.

It might be an idea if your daughter were to do a similar thing and write (or print, if writing's an issue) a small gift tag sized message on a string to go inside their Christmas cards.

That would avoid any 'but what about me ..' conversations.

Fuzzpig- yes, I know! It's flown by for us too. She's been in school for a year and a half and loves it. She has a full time one to one lady, and she's making huge progress. We are so proud of her. Smile

Isildur- That sounds a lovely idea! Then she could give a little something back to her friends in return. We'll have to start doing them early, as she can't manage too much writing in one go. Smile

What a lovely idea. It's making me feel all Christmasy.

Actually thinking about it, we did a similar thing one year when the boys made glitter covered cardboard stars and bookmarks to put inside people's cards.

Getting my eldest to even write 'to X from Y' made me want to chew my own arm off in frustration, so we compromised Grin

I'm a great believer in glitter though, and realise I might be in a minority there. It's entirely possible that swathes of people were cursing me that year as they plucked sparkly bits from their carpets!

Ha ha! I think plucking sparkly bits from your carpets is what Christmas is all about. You have to have a bit of sparkle. Grin

aww mummyloveslucy I'm so glad to hear DD is getting on well. I remember your posts from ages ago (i've nc since then) when you were all really struggling with school so that's lovely to hear :)

mummyloveslucy · 19/11/2013 16:38

Aww, thank you! Smile Yes, it was a really rough time for us all. Her new school is fantastic! I never thought a school could be this good. She is very happy and popular with the other children, so it couldn't be better.

(And to get back on topic the garland idea is great :o)

Thank you. Smile
