If my 4 year old DS loves building stuff out of other stuff, what would he love for Christmas?

DS spends most of his time taping egg boxes to juice cartons to make space rockets. That's when he's not instructing me on what I MUST NOT put in the bin, or asking me if I have any gold so he can make me a necklace Grin. There are toilet roll tubes all over the house but apparently they all have specific functions!

GPs need some ideas for him. Is there anything that would tie into his current obsession or shall I just put a bow on the recycling bin?

craft box, construction toys, play frame, play silks - he def sounds like simple open ended toys would be best!

Geomag was very popular here.

leonardofquirm · 18/11/2013 21:04

Haha I think your DS sounds exactly like mine! We've had to relocate some of his 'making stuff'to the garage as we don't have room for every cereal box in the world.

He is also 4 so I am hanging around to pinch ideas. Blush

Have a look at Gears, Gears, Gears. My ds also got the John Adams Hotwires electronic building set aged 5 and loved it.

leonardofquirm · 18/11/2013 21:06

Oo he had a go of geomag before and loves magnets! (sorry OP)

smable · 18/11/2013 21:08

makedo?

FunkyBoldRibena · 18/11/2013 21:09

Have you got a scrapstore nearby? £20 to spend in there would be heaven...

RockPaperScissorsLizardSpock · 18/11/2013 21:09

I have a crafty 4 year old boy too Grin

I've got him something similar to this -

Wooden brio building sets? They look amazing but I don't have enough left in my budget to get DS any!

IHeartKingThistle · 18/11/2013 21:22

Wow what brilliant ideas! I've never seen the build it sets before, the open ended one looks perfect! Love the look of Geomag too.

This is my 4yr old DD, absolutely... down to the constant ferreting through the recycling box.

I'm currently thinking that I just won't get her any toys this Christmas, as her fave plaything at the moment is a treacle tin (clean)

leonardofquirm · 18/11/2013 21:34

The makedo car looks a bit like one that's DH and DS built, think he'd love finding the bits for those.

Thanks for the thread kingthistle!

Knex and rolobox

Tip: don't let your DS near Minecraft if you want to spend any quality time with him between now and his graduation...

NeverQuiteSure · 18/11/2013 21:38

He may also like those little hexbug insects. I have been debating buying just the actual bugs for 5 yo DS with the idea that he could construct habitats and runs for them out of loo rolls and old boxes.

IHeartKingThistle · 18/11/2013 21:58

NeverQuiteSure I already have rolobox for his stocking, was hoping it would be good!

I work in an early years unit, and many of our boys love using something called Mobilo (some available on Amazon, or try eBay) . I would also second the knex.

Kyrptonite · 18/11/2013 22:18

Mobilo is awesome. As is lasy but I have no idea where to buy it from. I'm considering smuggling the supply at work out up my jumper.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 18/11/2013 22:28

Can't believe nobody's said Lego? My DS is also obsessed with making stuff (we currently have a cardboard space rocket in the lounge, previously a boat "with a battering ram...") but when he's not doing the box thing, he is obsessed with his Lego. At least it's smaller and doesn't need quite as much help from me!

You could get a few different specific sets between you, or just a big box of mixed stuff, also they do a little set with different people and accessories (laptop, fruit & veg, animals, bicycles and loads more) which makes the plain stuff a lot more fun!

NeverQuiteSure · 19/11/2013 09:48

We had rolobox in stockings last year KingThistle and they were a big hit. They seem to have taken up permanent residence on our two of the cardboard boxes that we use to store our Playmobil vehicles, but they were attached to all manner of things before that.

Mobilo looks fantastic!
