I opened my bedroom curtains yesterday morning at 6.30am and was delighted that my M&S delivery had arrived and been carefully secured by the delivery person, who had gone to great lengths to ensure the goods were going to reach me in tip too condition.

Now click on my photos for the reality Hmm

That gate is locked from the inside BTW.

My hermes leaves parcels in the blue wheelie bin (just paper) or under the bbq cover or just hands it to me out the car window on the school run

DPD takes it round to my mums I haven't even filled in the form to do that

Yodel I am always in for I think I have only missed them once and they gave the parcel to a neighbour and put a card through my door.

Royal mail just don't bring the parcel just the 'sorry you were out card' even though I am mostly in at that time!

lade · 17/11/2013 11:15

Ours was also thrown over a 6ft fence. Unfortunately for Yodel, on the other side of the fence was a shed, so there was no possible method of retrieving the item (without climbing over the fence with stepladders either side!) So we complained, they resent the items to me for free, and we managed (eventually) to get the original items back!

They never did that one again Grin

Neighbour had a top spec printer delivered whilst away on holiday. DHL helpfully left it in the recycle bin rather than leaving it with any of the neighbours who happily take in parcels here. One of said helpful neighbours put out the recycling bin for collection as they were on holiday and printer ended up crushed.

Clutterbugsmum · 17/11/2013 12:15

See I feel very lucky.

My Yodel/hermes delivery driver take my parcels to my mums house around the corner if I'm not in (9 times out of 10 I'm at mums anyway Grin). And vice versa.

EatingAllTheCrumpets · 18/11/2013 19:54

We're lucky that most are left in the recycle bin. However I had a wonderful one from Yodel who left it on the doorstep in full view. Tbh I was more surprised it hadn't been pinched as we live in a rough area!

We had a mystery parcel that couldn't be delivered by Yodel last week, they kept putting the little card through the door but didn't detail who it was for, I rang to find out who it was for and arrange a re-delivery or something, due to data protection they couldn't tell me who the parcel was for (confused) it took half an hour for them to decide to tell me who it was for, fuckwits.

This is why most of my parcels are sent to my work!

CelticPromise · 18/11/2013 20:09

Our MyHermes lady is fab. She found my cat's collar a few streets away last week, recognised my name and put it through the door with a card. I don't even get that many deliveries.

DontCallMeBaby · 18/11/2013 20:32

We're usually lucky - Parcel Force actually bring parcels, and the chap from Yodel is actually really nice and helpful (I know!!) Our porch isn't actually secure, but nothing's ever gone missing.

DHL disgraced themselves by delivering a package of MAC make-up to an undisclosed address, signed for by someone with a totally different name to mine, no card left for me. So - um, how am I supposed to get that back then.

My favourite is a Virgin Wine cock-up from years ago. We lived in the basement flat of one building, while our friends lived in the top flat of a similarly named building. One day I happened to be up in the main building, looking for missing post - we could tell if the regular postie was off, as the two basement flats would stop getting post - and I noticed a box of wine addressed to our friends. I dutifully trotted round to tell them, only to find out that it was WELL overdue, so they'd already called Virgin to complain. Virgin Wine policy was that if your wine went missing, they would replace, no questions asked (you did have to sign for the replacement though). They got their new box, we took them the original box, drank rather a lot of it, and split the rest. Smile

My delivery man puts my parcels in a little shed in my garden (if my back gate is left open). Otherwise he throws them over the gate into my garden.
I am not remotely bothered by either method, but then I track anything breakable and wait in for it, or make sure I leave my back gate open.

It seems to me that wherever a delivery person leaves a parcel, one person will complain it is not acceptable and one person will be fine with it.

As for my delivery man, he told me he only has certain options on his digeridoo to explain where he has left the parcel. I remember front porch, back porch, garage, greenhouse, outbuilding, shed. This might explain why some parcels are left on the doorstep and it is logged as 'porch'.

It might not be the driver writing in the location of the parcel, it may be a multi choice he has picked from to point you in the general direction.

Still, don't let that stop the bitch fest on here. I quite enjoy reading these threads. Grin

I actually had a nice Yodel delivery guy for a while Shock - he lived just down the road, delivered everything by bike, and seemed to either have a good idea when I'd be in or kept coming back until I was, rather than leaving stuff in the bin. Friendly too, which made a change from the scowling guy in a van we used to get before.

But I haven't seen him cycling round with the trailer recently, so I am guessing he has given up, which probably means we are back to the previous guy who delivered my parcels at random to the same house number two streets away, or to a similar street name half a mile away, or just left them on my doorstep.

oxcat1 · 18/11/2013 20:53

I had a missed delivery card which simply said that the parcel had been left 'in a property.' No further instructions to narrow it down out of the many hundreds of properties on my road!

exexpat · 18/11/2013 20:54

littlemisssarcastic - I wonder if the reason that 'front step' is not an option on the multiple choice thing is because it is not a good idea to leave things in full view and exposed to the rain on someone's front step. A porch is a very different matter.

littlemisssarcastic · 18/11/2013 21:36

I agree exexpat. A front door step seems a strange place to leave a parcel if you are hoping it is safe and dry.

oxcat That made me chuckle a little. A property? Ha ha ha.

Crutchlow A perfect example of why a recycling bin is a terrible place to leave parcels.

I am lucky that I live in a low crime area and have a small shed that is unsecured where a delivery person can leave a parcel.

I wonder if everyone has a particular place they would prefer their parcels to be left when they are not in??

A laptop was apparently left on out door step, the picture I was emailed as proof of delivery was a Samsung laptop box with an address label on it so totally obvious what it was. The delivery compant were shocked when it wasn't there when I got home.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 18/11/2013 22:12

I once rang to find out what had happened to a rug I was waiting for to be told that it had been left in my greenhouse. The chap on the phone clearly thought I was trying it on when I explained that I don't have a greenhouse. To his credit he did send another one but I never did find out what happened to the original, or whether it was even delivered.

sadmum1000 · 18/11/2013 22:17

I had a a parcel last year from Next or M&S. Didn't get stolen but was left on doorstep at 9pm in pouring rain. Was pure chance I and found at midnight or wouldn't have spotted until next am. Delivery note said 'left in a safe place'!!!

DramaAlpaca · 18/11/2013 22:26

A delivery man once left a parcel buried inside a bush just outside our gate. He didn't bother to leave a card & we had no idea it was there. It was a present from MIL & we didn't actually tell her it hadn't arrived because she wasn't well at the time & would've fretted about trying to track it down.

We found it by accident six months later when DH was up a ladder. He looked down & could see something inside the bush that had been totally invisible from ground level. Fortunately the parcel was wrapped in plastic & was in perfect condition. We never told his mother though!

Dillydollydaydream · 19/11/2013 07:51

My best one was waiting in all day for a delivery, followed it on the tracker to see that it has been 'signed for' by property number 19. Our street doesn't even have a 19.

Eventually it turned out the delivery driver had delivered it to the next village with a similar name (lane instead of street). To his credit he did go round to retrieve it, luckily he got it back and redelivered to me.

These posts have made me chuckle!
I used to work for cust svcs for a home shopping company, and heard many stories about where the delivery company had left parcels. One elaborate one was when the driver had chucked a parcel over a wall, that had knocked over a tin of paint that the dog had walked in and traipsed through the house. I think they were looking for compensation.
I've recently had 3 text messages about a parcel being delivered and have had 2 this week about it being collected. I have no idea what this parcel is and where it was delivered, so I hope the delivery company don't turn up looking for it!
