Can I have a tree with a 1 year old?

I really, really want a proper Christmas tree with decorations, etc. However, I have a 1 year old DD and I am worried that I'm going to spend my whole time putting the decorations back on the tree after she's taken them off.

Any ideas? Anyone else with this 'dilemma'?

Same problem here! I think we are going to get one and put in in DS's playpen.

We put the tree inside a playpen - then I decided it wasn't festive enough so wrapped loads of tinsel round the playpen.

Then yes spent most of the time putting the tinsel back on the playpen.

As long as tree is secure and won't topple over why not just put some non precious 1 y/o friendly decorations on lower branches - she can take them off and play with them.

Or put on table?

We're not bothering this year as ds2 will be just 1 and has a climbing habit! I'd never get any peace!

We're going to get a small (ish) one to put on the sideboard then getting a big tree to put outside on the decking with a few outdoor friendly lights & decorations so we can all see it from the kitchen, but it's safe from the 1 year old!

Another one who put tree inside playpen! Worked a treat Smile

At one year old your DD will probably love looking at the lights. Just make sure there are child friendly decorations within their reach. I was worried about it when my Ds was 14 months but he hardly touched it.

My mums friend was putting the Christmas tree in the playpen 33 years ago!

Just make sure all precious decorations are up high and resist putting on any chocolate decorations or you will never get any peace!

Have 3 toddlers, never needed to hide the tree away. The first couple of days they go up to it and maybe one or two of the bottom baubles are pulled off but after that the novelty wears off and they just never bother with it again.

As long as the breakables are on the top it's safe.

We put ours on one of those cheap square tables from IKEA. We had some child friendly decorations around the bottom & his little face when discovered one was chocolate was priceless!

It had the added bonus that ddog didn't cock his leg on the tree which has also been more of a problem of Christmas past in the sweet householdBlush

Fairylea · 16/11/2013 07:01

We will put ours in the kitchen as ds isn't allowed in there...otherwise presents would all be unwrapped !

I couldn't use the playpen as I'd be lost without being able to put ds in it !

whatsonyourplate · 16/11/2013 07:55

We are putting ours on top of the TV cabinet which is about waist height (to me).

We had a crawling and cruising 8 month old last year. We just had a smallish tree, with no special or glass ornaments on it. And no lights either!

He did actually bite a bauble and crush it with his little gums, so do be careful about what is in their reach. I had to fish loads of green plastic out of his mouth! He only pulled the tree over twice maybe in the four weeks it was up.

I'm going to put mine in the kitchen. DS is 18 months and will still be able to see it and play with it supervised. I don't want to put it in the living room and then not be able to turn my back for fear of him toppling it over.
