Musical instruments (percussion) for my 4/6yos

Me again Blush :o

So thinking of getting some nice instruments for my DCs this Xmas. I am probably getting myself a ukulele :o and we already have a piano and a djembe drum.

Have been looking at amazon - like the look (and price!) of the Melissa and Doug band in a box but there's loads of others too! Not sure whether it'd be better to get a ready made set or put a few different things together myself.

Thinking of things like tambourine, mini cymbals, guiro etc. Wooden would be naice nice. There is a local tourist place that has really lovely fair trade instruments so could get a rainmaker there.

Any thoughts of what to get or good places to look? :)

If you google Amusica you'll find a really good website with excellent instruments. They really know their stuff.

You could all get ukuleles Grin in different colours and start a band...

these frogs are fun - they croak if you stroke them with the thick end of the stick from back to front. Also make nice mellow drum sound it hit on the front. Go for medium size or larger. You could get a family of them and recreate McCartney frog song!

boomwhackers!

I've got a triangle for dd1's stocking. I'm scoping for some mini cymbals. What about a tin whistle? Or hand bells? I'd quite like to get one of those wooden instruments with bumps on that you run a stick down to make a noise - not sure what they're called (which is a barrier to my finding one to buy!)

That's a guiro attheendoftheday

(Although the frogs 3bunnies linked to seem to do the same!)

Thanks for the ideas, I'd never heard of boom whackers!

I've also seen a set of 8 bells which make different notes... oh dear this could get expensive :o

A guiro, thank you!

Off to look for one now.

Bumping in case of any more ideas!

Looked into the Melissa and Doug set a bit more and some say the quality is poor so I'm more tempted to put together a set myself. I've found a couple of local music shops so hopefully I can try things out, and I'll get a little basket to put them in... ridiculously excited!

We have lots of instruments, xylophone is one of dd's favourites, we have a drum kit (but has been put away as its too noisy, might have to get it back out as dd wants to start drum lessons), we have a guitar and ukulele but they don't get played with as much as they are harder to play, the most played with are the keyboard and the toy saxophone (from elc). She's not as bothered about tamborines, maracas etc.. but she is older than your dd.

I told my DH about the idea today - he's on board and has requested a jaw harp :o

We have boomwackers from LIdl, they are quite good.

Well I'm back from the local music shop :o

Tambourine, two different handbells, claves, a big guiro, triangle, jaw harp, two maracas and a pair of finger cymbals. Around £40.

Also got my ukulele but that is MINE ALL MINE :)

Got a big basket to put them in with plenty of space left. There's other instruments I'd like to get such as those suggested above, but what we've agreed is that instead of spending more now, we (or Santa :o) will add to our collection on future xmases to freshen up the collection.

I am SO excited to see their faces when they open it!
