Has anyone made their own stockings?

DD is 2 this year and it will e DSs first Christmas. I'd like them to have a stocking that can be reused every year.

I think it would be lovely if I could make them one each. I'm not a crafty person and I'm wondering if this will be just be a diaster?

So has anyone made their own stockings before or got any ideas?

Watching with interest as I'd love to make all 4 of mine one.
There are templates online.. I just need a trip to the fabric shop to buy some red felt.

EverSoNear · 12/11/2013 11:07

I made Ds's stocking for his first Christmas. I used red felt, a template from online somewhere and a sewing machine, easy as pie. I wanted to make it a keepsake, so I cut up some of the prem baby clothes I had of his that I wanted to keep and used them to create a pattern around the top.

Pinterest is fantastic for ideas. I was really pleased with how mine came out, and I hate sewing!

I make loads of stockings some are on my profile. I do it because they like certain characters that I like trying to create. you can but multi packs of 50 felt sheets in 8 different colours and shades for about 9 pound.

Thanks for the replies Smile

Glad to hear other peoples have turned out okay. I'll have a look on pintrest for some idea.

Supermariosister, where do you get the 50 pack of felt from?

My dd's have their own stockings made by their great grandmother, that she made.
I have some material coming to make my dd's Santa sacks. Just need some white fur trim. I was going to embroider their names on their sacks.

olibeansmummy · 14/11/2013 20:20

Ds's stocking was made by my sister's mil and it's amaaaaaaaazing, mind you she is very skilled and has lots of fancy equipment!

DontCallMeDaughter · 14/11/2013 20:32

I used this blog to do ours

glue gun annie

I used fleece as the lining so they didn't need any quilt batting as well.

They are really nice, I'm pleased with them!

KnittedJimmyChoos · 14/11/2013 20:59

I really wanted too.

There is a shop called VW Rouleux or something and I had visions of going there and perusing the silks and velvets and creating a beautiful stocking for DD's.

However I didn't have the time so ended up getting this, which looks sort of home made?

Aw that John lewis stocking is lovely!

Thanks for the glue gun Annie link. It seems quite simple.

I've found some lovely christmassy fabric, but it's cotton. Do you think I should use felt though? Will it be easier? I don't have a sewing machine if that makes any difference. So Ill have to do it by hand Sad

My Nan made me one and I made one for DD1 and am making one for DD2 this year - in the same style as the one my Nan made me.

They are red velvet, lined (mine was satin lined but the DD's have lovely themed cotton). I applique onto them characters made out of felt and sequins etc - I still have reindeer my NAN made 40 years ago with sequined collars, so I sew those on and then I do a tree plus something individual.

They are gorgeous - I treasured mine for years (and still feel pain at its loss in a house fire) and I hope the girls treasure theirs too.

BeCoolFucker · 15/11/2013 10:34

mine didn't really take any special equipment though I do sew the body of the stocking on the machine. The felt things and sequins are stitched on in front of the telly.

Lorelailovesluke · 15/11/2013 10:35

I got some plain stockings from hobby craft and then added bits to make them special.

DontCallMeDaughter · 15/11/2013 15:05

Cotton will be fine, mine were done it cotton with the fleece layer. One of them is all cotton with quilt wadding in between. Hand sewing is a pain though, how many do you need to do? Only 6 weeks till Christmas!!

crazykat · 15/11/2013 15:38

I'm making my DCs one each this year - light and dark blue, light and dark purple, and neon pink for dd2. The general stocking shouldn't be too difficult (I hope) but I'm going to try and put their names on them.

TicTacZebra · 17/11/2013 18:44

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm looking forward to getting started. Smile

I'm only making 2 so 6 weeks should be enough time. I hope!

Sorry to heat about your house Fire BrCoolFucker. Sad it must have been horrible loosing your sentimental things. I'm sure your DC will treasure the ones you've made them too.

Ive made these for everyone in the family and a few friends, super easy here

elQuintoConyo · 17/11/2013 21:05

In the run-up to DS's December birth, I mdae his stockingout of purple felt with a white fur trim, embroidered his name on the top. Then I sewed on big round felt 'baubles' all around the stocking, 18 in total, and linked them up with a chain sticth (piss easy, I remembere dit from school!) so it looks like the baubles are all linked together. Every year, I get his stockingout early and print a photo of him from the ^PREVIOUS Christmas and stick it to the next bauble. When he's 19, he can have his finished stocking with 18 pictures of his as he grows Smile Aww, I'm so sappy!

I also made at the time quilted gold stockings for me, my DM and DGM, and a quilted silver stocking for DH and DFil, all with our titles embroidered. They turned out lovely. I hadn't been sewing long, I was very impressed with myself Smile

OneUp · 18/11/2013 21:01

I'm trying to make stockings this year, except I've lost the material. I have to make 3 and I'm seriously running out of time and I can't find it anywhere!

beachyhead · 18/11/2013 21:07

I made three out of old jumpers. Just cut out a stocking shape so I had two bits ( front and back of jumper), then sewed them together by hand. Then got some red wool and a big needle and sewed around the edges.

Then I sewed buttons , ribbons, initials of each child on theirs and Pom poms as well... I love them and they are really stretchy so Father Christmas can stuff everything else inGrin
