I was thinking Curious Incident of the Dog etc but just looked at tickets and better seats start at £73 (gulp). There are £19 seats with restricted views but that doesn't seem like a christmas treat.

Anyone booked anything else similar or got any tips?

DC are young teens and not keen on pantos so they're off the menu.

theatre is crazy expensive! Maybe you could team up with another family to get group discount? (need 10+ people)

We're going to see Raymond Briggs 'Father Christmas' at the Lyric theatre. Tickets are £10 each as it's only an hour long.

fab thank you! I'm going to investigate the day tickets a bit more, never considered this before.

Brass - from the 10th December, get into London theatre are doing lots of theatre tickets including curious incident for less than half price.

It is an amazing show.

Have a look at the Southbank for family events - there are some nice things on for Christmas if I recall.

We are going to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - not seasonal but part of our Christmas London trip.

Took DS to the IMAX to see the Polar Express one year. It was amazing - the only way to see it. Never forget all those little children trying to catch the 3D snowflakes. Smile

We have tickets for Emil and the Detectives, I think at at the National. It is not really christmassy, but it is quite a short run.

The thing about day tickets is that you are taking risk. What if you get to the front of the queue and they have none left. My DH tried to get day tickets for Curious Incident recently and I think they only had about 10 (or maybe 10 pairs). Anyway, he was reasonably early (works nearby) but the person in front got the last ones. Didn't matter as we live in London so did not really need to be that particular day (just found ourselves without the DC at the last minute), and in fact they still had full price tickets which he ended up buying.
if you are going to try and get them, do check what quantities they sell in. Some are definitely just pairs or singles, not larger parties.

AbiRoad · 12/11/2013 14:13

War Horse woudl be good for that age group, if you can get tickets.

Guitargirl · 13/11/2013 18:21

We have been to see the Snowman for the last 4 years and never paid more than £12 (seats at the back) per ticket. It's not for your DCs' age group though. We are going to see Boing! this year, which looks fun.

Titsalinabumsquash · 13/11/2013 18:23

Have you looked at your Mumsnet Local area page? We featured Christmas shows this week. Smile

thanks for the replies.

Curiousgeorgie - I'm worried 10th Dec might be leaving it too late

AbiRoad - they've done Warhorse but Emil is on the shortlist although it might be a bit 'young'. I don't mind if it isn't Christmassy. Just needs to be interesting/entertaining.

In previous years we've done panto, BFG, Paddington, Skellig, Amazonia, Fela Kuti and Warhorse. DC are a bit older now so Curious Incident really fits the bill as both have also read the book. I've just seen Golem at the young vic which might also suit. It doesn't need to be a west end show as some of the smaller productions can be awesome just need to be able to find them! They aren't listed as widely as the west end shows are so have to trawl around.
