Christmas

Is it even worth buying a 3 month old baby anything for Christmas?

family members are buying presents for DD (will be 14 weeks old at Xmas)- DP and I were racking our brains last night trying to think what we could buy- it just seems like a 'token gesture ' though- she wont even know what day of the week it is.

DS1 (now 13) has a similar birthday date to DD and I distinctly remember feeling a bit 'meh' on his first christmas as it obviously went over his head.

What would you do? And if you would- could you link me to some age appropriate presents purlease???

I would get a beautiful toy that will be a keepsake, as 'your first Christmas present' - but just something small. But I like things like that.

I wrapped up some wrapping paper for dd for her first Xmas as that was her favourite bit. And got her one beautiful book.

for my eldest dd we got her a baby swing - only because I saw it reduced when I was buying for otger people!! she was 5 weeks.

dd2 was 6 months so did buy more as we had got rid of most of the baby toys.

but for both my dds 1st bdays my friends clubbed together for engraved silver moneyboxes which we love. so maybe something like that.

or alternatively premium bonds (could potentially win money for them)

Last year DS was almost 5 months at Christmas. We got him some of the things he might need between then and his summer birthday, so a few toys and books, but mainly clothes. My parents got him an IKEA highchair which we suggested when asked what we wanted for him, but they also gave him a few toys which weren't much used at first, but he's gotten a lot of play out of them since.

This year I'm still trying to think of things he's likely to enjoy over the next 6 months plus, and also to widen his selection of toys from the few he's had so far, so we'll get him a doll, maybe some musical instruments, a garage etc.

You can make as big or as little a deal out of christmas at this age (or any other really) as you want. If you've got a wide selection of toys/clothes/books from older children I can see why you may not feel the need to get much at christmas.

You could always make up a treasure basket. :)

what about a piece of jewelery you can put away for when she is older. that way she did get a gift for her first xmas but the value isn't gone iyswim - maybe a charm bracelet you can add to as she grows?

But I don't think there is anything wrong with not getting a gift, or getting something small like a book or clothes

DS was 10 months and still playing with stuff he's been bought at birth so we bought him some Expedit from Ikea that we were going to buy anyway to hold the mountain of palstic he got from everyone else. We did a stocking with some little bits in but that was it. This year (nearly 2) he's getting an easel and some stocking fillers - we're putting cash aside for his birthday in February when we'll get him some big garden toys. He doesn't know the difference and will be spoily by everyone else.

DD was 8 weeks and we got her a stocking which is the one she has used every year since. It had very little in it. A book and a teething toy I think. We also got her a "my first Xmas [year]" bauble which she now loves hanging on the tree each year. By chance, I saw a friend on 22nd who had a jumperoo (I'd never seen them before), went home & found it reduced on Amazon and, despite not ordering until late that night, it arrived on 24th so she had that too. There were about 15 other presents from relatives and we have a lovely photo of her on Xmas Day in her Xmas outfit sat surrounded by all of her toys. Many of them, she still has and she loves looking at the photo and going "that's X which [name of person] gave me".

You don't need to get anything at all, if family want to get bits the wondercube (can't do the linking thing..) looks good, rainmakers are nice and my 6 mo gets hours of fun playing with a reflective blanket which are only a couple of £ on amazon too.

I got DS a lovely hardback book of children's stories in and wrote a message in the front. He loves it now (he's three) and the stories range from nursery rhymes to those for 10+ so I'm hoping he'll want to read it for a long time to come. Planning on doing the same for dd, who will be 8 months at Christmas.

I just think it's nice to buy them something so you can pose them amidst all the wrapping paper and photograph them with the caption "X's first Christmas!"

DS2 will be 6 weeks and will get a Sophie the Giraffe (always fancied one for DS1 but was too mean to splash out so Christmas is a good excuse) and some of DS1s old toys and Christmas clothes wrapped up. It's really only because DS1 understands Christmas this year and will like opening his little brother's stocking.

DS1 was only a few days old for his first Christmas so we got him nothing. Most of my presents that year were stuff for him though. That sucked

DD is 17 weeks now. I've bought her the Beatrix Potter books (cheap on the Book People) as her main gift. Also a nice wooden advent calendar. But suppose those are both mainly for me seeing as she is mainly interested in her own fingers. Smile

Dd will be 3 y and 4 days this Xmas and will be first we've given her more than a single small item - year one probably nothing, year 2 a single book and year 3 (she was just 2) the Peppa Pig annual. DS will be 8.5mo and I am toying with giving him the new towels he and dd need :)

That said I'm LOVING stocking up on things for dd this year.

Grin my DD was 6 months on her first Christmas.
There's a video of her rolling about in her sleepy bag by the fireplace with the Father Christmas Letter.
She did have presents but didn't know what to do and watched her 3yo brother open his.

But , now she's 11yo, she watches the video very judgily and wants to know what she had and I cannot remember Blush

So you need to buy her something or incur the wrath.

Ah good point about older sibling wondering about DS. Definitely some towels then, and maybe a teething necklace as he seems to have awful teething. Some great ideas on here. Thanks OP!

DS was 14 weeks old (ish...) at his first Christmas. I got him a toy box and put 3 or 4 baby toys in it - a Woozit, a rattle, a Squoosh thing. I would have put in a Sophie giraffe, but didn't get round to getting one.

I should add, in case I sound a total skinflint, that because we didn't get DD anything for Xmas or bday first few years we bought a big thing each summer as the development between present deluges in December was - and is - huge. First year a beautiful quality doll, second year a scooter, and this year the beginnings of some wooden train track etc.. All a huge success as we didn't have to guess what would be suitable. We hope she will be happy to carry on the tradition later as 361 days a long tome to wait between present requests!

I distinctly remember feeling silly at DD1's 1st Christmas as I unwrapped the things I had wrapped a few days earlier...

She was 7 weeks and we bought a few nice outfits, a couple of small toys and some books for her... But let's face it, they were for us Wink

It did make for nice pictures though.

This year she's 3 and SO excited... I actually can't wait.

DP lost his job just after DS was born so for his first Christmas we really couldn't afford much, I stiff feel horrible about this I'm ashamed to admit I didnt even take any picitures of his first christmas thats how stressed I was Sad
Its not so much about not being worth it because he didn't care at the time, its about the memories you create to look back on.
Thankfully with DD we could afford to get her presents and we bought mainly meaningful keepsakey presents; a personalised 1st Christmas Minnie Mouse toy, a personalised Tinkerbell snowglobe, 2012 bauble, a silver cross doll, and a 2012 Steiff bear that I haven't let her touch yet and a few toys.
