Nice (but bargainous) things to put in hamper for the PILs?

Planning on doing a foodie hamper for the in-laws for Christmas. Any ideas what to put in apart from the obligatory bottle of fizz? Ideally looking for bargains, 3 for 2 etc to get as much as possible. Budget around £30-£40.

Lets club together and get Rosie a hamper! I have some PG Tips, a jar of peaches and half a packet of pistachios I'd like to donate Grin

I actually think a hamper is a great gift if it's really thoughtful and personal. My BF and her DH are really into walking and UK mini breaks so i did them a hamper with B&B and walking guide books and travel stuff (Graham & Green wash bags, cowshed stuff, cool flask etc). Theres a big difference between a properly made hamper and old box with some crackers and a can of spam.

Last year i did my 11 year old niece a baking hamper and put various tins, bun cases, cake stand, whisk, spatula, novelty timer, measuring spoons, cake decorations, ingredients to make bread,a cookbook and apron in it.she loved it.
I make my dad a cheese, crackers, cold meats and chutney hamper as this is the type of food he enjoys eating especially over xmas as he manages a pub so often eats very late and it suits him to munch on when he's busy.

Gosh what vitriol. I'm surprised you have any friends Rosie and if you do, I hope they don't waste any money buying you a gift this Christmas, it seems nothing would be 'good enough' for you.

I had no idea my thread would start a debate on whether hampers were a good idea!

Thank you all for the suggestions for foodie hampers. You've given me some good ideas for the PILs. Some of the hampers you've done sound great!

Hey don't vent on me because I call a spade a spade.

A basket full of crap is a basket full of crap .. no matter how many times you call it 'a themed hamper'.

Right-o Rosie. We've got the message...

I do a hamper for FIL. He hates too much money being spent on him, one year he asked for some garden twine, has no need for clothes and no desire for 'experiences'

I fill it with homemade chutney, homemade chocolate truffles and ginger biscuits. A small fruit cake and a couple of homemade meals like nice fish pie or vegetable curry. He's 85 and a widower who tries very hard to cook for himself but doesn't enjoy it so I like to think this makes his life a little easier. I also put in some treats for his dog.

It's only a basket of crap if you, er, fill it with crap. I'm sure many people put plenty of thoughts into their hampers and other gifts except my ILs
