Vegetarian Christmas dinner ideas?

flavorlessne like to share their recommendations for a vegetarian 'main'? We are feeding 6 veggies and 2 meat eaters. I'm doing turkey and ham for the carnivores. I'd like to keep things fairly traditional in terms of the style of meal so plan the usual roast potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, cranberry sauce, gravy etc but I need inspiration for a veggie centre piece.

The past few years we have had quorn roast as have been at parents or ILs and it's the easiest thing for them to fit in with their own meal plans, but to be honest it isn't particularly nice, often turns out dry and flavourless and no one particularly likes it, so I'd like to try something more interesting.

I usually have some form of pasty or pie. There was a delicious recipe on River Cottage I think which had squash with stilton wrapped in cabbage leaf inside pastry. I think it was the cheese that lifted it and made it special and stops it being veg with veg with veg.

I would imagine it could be made with a variety of veg.

I have to say I am also more than happy with just the trimmings but people do feel obliged to provide something special. When it has just been me I get a nice tart from M&S - one of the gooey Camembert ones.

I made this Parsnip, cranberry and chestnut roast a couple of years ago and it was very successful. I might do it again this year.

Loads of fab ideas to mulll over - thanks! I'll nip down to H&B and get a sample of the Redwoods roast to try out in advance. Brie and cranberry is calling to me too! And I've done whole Camembert roasted for starters in the past-that might work nicely as a side or a savory dessert.

All 3 DCs have an aversion to mushrooms sadly - I love them. But, I'll be checking out the Wellington recipes for myself!

We've never really tried much in the way of nut roast. DH has always been of the opinion he didn't like nuts but has started eating them recently so maybe that's one to give a dry run to in advance too.

I forsee many scrummy experimental Sunday lunches in the next few weeks!

cecyhall those stuffed Thanksgiving burgers look lush! I think they would do very nicely for Boxing Day when I'll be feeding 10 vegetarians (and 2 carnivores! ) Do you reckon they'd freeze KFC prepared in advance?

In fact, it was a toss up between that one ^^ and this Festive Squash Jalouise which you could omit the mushrooms on.

Can anyone help please, we will have a houseful for Christmas and a few don't eat much meat incl DD (age 7) who is veggie. Having read this thread I am actually thinking of a fancy chicken pie for the meat eaters and some sort of pie or tart for the veggies. Problem is I don't think DD will like a lot of the ingredients in the recipes listed so far, Eg mushrooms, chestnuts, parsnips,blue cheese, goat cheese. She will eat most other veg, lentils etc and cheese. Any bright ideas?

Whatever you do not make Cranks spinach and cheese pie. I made it a couple of years ago for myself and all the meat eaters ate it. Gutted.

A nut roast would be great - I have a Sarah Brown recipe for a cashew nut and mushroom roast with mushroom and sherry sauce. It is the nicest nut roast I have ever eaten and would be happy to send you the recipe if you liked the sound of it.

Mabel - I used to do little pies for the dds in jam tart tins. Fry v finely diced onion and carrot, maybe a pepper and a bit of garlic, maybe finely chopped sweet potatoes and/or butternut squash. Fry them all up until tenderish and add herbs/spices as wished, then a drained tin of green lentils, perhaps a bit of cheese. Then proceed as you would for mince pies, basically.

Pies sound ace, ta. Will come in handy. I also found a cheese and leek pie which might work.
