Wooden trains

Hi, would like to get a wooden train set ( to add to with birthdays) etc ... But am totally confused by the different ranges. Heard or read somewhere that ELC, big jigs and brio are all interchangeable - has anyone done this? Have a few brio things would love to put with an ELC set - seen a set with £25 off at ELC.

DS has bits from Ikea, John Lewis, Thomas wooden railway and Brio and they are all compatable. The Thomas wooden trains fit too.

DS started off with this set from John Lewis.

Funnily enough, he never had any ELC stuff, but I'm fairly sure it would fit too.

We had brio and elc, and they were interchangeable.

Oh thanks, that looks a nice set too! Yes think he would like a wooden track with Thomas as well. We have Christmas and birthday close together so hoping to get him a variety of train things!

tkmax have v nice brio sets in ranging from £16.99 to £29.99 for a safari set

Large cheap random brand set, real Brio and Tesco track here, all fit together just fine.

Only issue is the fancy Brio train with a driver figure is to high for the cheaply sets tunnel.

DS had ELC and Brio and they interchanged easily. I also bought a cheaper set which was about a mm or two out, fine for ordinary trains but DS had a battery powered one which snagged on the tracks (which I then had to weed out and get rid of as the meltdowns were epic)
One tip though, genuine Thomas Brio trains in good condition sell for mega money second hand on eBay :)

The Brio trains sets are fab, and it's useful for relatives to buy additional items for too.

Oh thanks, sounds like it will work! Grandparents like to "choose" (interestingly sometimes!) but do not mind a general theme which I hope this will fit! Yes and we have one lovely brio train would be nice to use.

I got a brilliant set from B&M at the weekend, it's really big has bridges and all sorts, was only £16 and it compatible with the others above. So far I've had a few items from different makers as wooden trains and the only ones that don't quite fit right (although you can force them together!) are the ones from Tesco.
