I don't want to buy (all) my Christmas from Argos and Amazon. I'd like to feel better about where I am spending my money by supporting individual craftspeople, small businesses and independent retailers. Also I'd like to find some more original presents than the usual mass-produced, discounted whatever. So here are some suggestions of things I might be buying: please feel free to add yours too.

Amazingly lovely bath bombs from here
Delicious-sounding chutneys from here - this is doubly worthy since they use produce that is not sold at market because it is too ripe, ie in perfect condition but nonetheless about to be thrown away, and employ vulnerable women from local shelters to turn it into jams and chutneys.
Persephone Books - gorgeous reprints of neglected works by women writers. There are some absolute gems, including Mariana, The Making of a Marchionness, and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.
Artisanal beeswax products including hand and body balms - lovely article about this family-run business here

I'm sure there are loads of others. I'll post them when I have a bit more time. Please add yours!

The last one is lovely too. Will make a perfect present for my mum :)

I like these people for herbs and spices but admittedly they are not local. Though do order their coffee rub if you get the chance.

If I don't have Facebook, is there any way to look at these Facebook companies? Thanks.

Geneticsbunny · 10/11/2013 22:24

No one has mentioned etsy yet. It is like an exciting online shopping centre of craft. You can even select local only. Some people do try to sell some crap on there but you can tell from looking at it.

thereistheball · 11/11/2013 21:40

I think it got mentioned upthread. I like etsy but you need to know what you're looking for. If anyone has found something special there please do link.

Sewing Circus does handmade clothes for children. It's especially great for little girls who love space, dinosaurs, adventure, etc. and colours other than (or in addition to) pink!

BillyBanter · 12/11/2013 02:11

My order from Rupert Blamire Ceramics arrived today and is just beautiful. I know I will have some very happy friends at Christmas!

JacqueslePeacock · 15/11/2013 12:57

I really want to have a look at Sewing Circus but I'm not on Facebook. Do I have to make a Facebook account in order to buy something? Argh.

A friend of mine creates some lovely handmade children's toys at twolittleflowers.com/store/shop/colouring-in-toys.
A unique gift for little ones - they colour the toy in themselves, which is, I think, what made the crocodile my son's most favourite toy ever. He sleeps with it every night!

Troubleintmill · 16/11/2013 21:49

I like the sound of the colour yourself toys biscuit, do you have to use special fabric pens?
I think my DS might like the Croc one.
