DS9 wants Nothing for Xmas. Makes me feel a bit sad.

DD is bubbling in excitement about Xmas but DS9 wants nothing except a new tennis racket. So he told me this morning that he'll just put things that DD wants on his list as hers is full and he doesn't want anything.

I suppose I should be happy as all his mates seem to be wanting xbox s and I pads but instead it made me feel sad. We have a wii/ 3ds/ nexus so he doesn't really need more gadgets but he's not even asking for new games and we don't buy anything except at birthdays and Xmas.

What would you do?

by him an adventure day somewhere?

hoppinghare · 05/11/2013 15:30

What a lovely little boy. I'd get him something you know he would love if you can.

KatoPotato · 05/11/2013 15:31

What a lovely boy! Gifts for DD and is still bubbling with excitement?

How about a voucher in lieu of xmas, so if he wants something later in the year he could get that?

Luggage16 · 05/11/2013 15:32

I would be very proud of my child if they said that. How thoughtful of him to say he would put things his sister would like! I would encourage that and not find it odd - maybe ask him if he would like to go out to choose something from his sisters list to buy her :)

As for what to get him maybe he would appreciate a gift like an animal adoption somewhere he can go and visit the animal he has sponsored?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2013 15:35

Its lovely that he's willing to get presents for his sister instead of for himself.

The adventure day is a good idea; perhaps there's some other things that could go with the tennis racket (not sure what other than balls!); some cool T-shirts/sweatshirt; does he have a good sleeping bag if he's into sleepovers? is he into music yet? if so iTunes voucher; or maybe some money which is his to spend later if he wants something other than birthday/xmas. Some kids really like choosing something for themselves after Christmas at half price!

sadmum1000 · 05/11/2013 15:50

he still believes in Father Christmas so I feel as though there should be something under the tree rather than money (although that is the sensible option). Adventure day may be a option, thanks I'll look into those. I bet he would like a metal detector too but don't want him to dig up the garden and don't live near a beach so not sure if that would just gather dust.

He sounds lovely! And I'd definitely be pleased that he's not wanting the latest such and such...

I'm sure you can find some stuff that he does like. My DSDs virtually always say "dunno" when we ask what they'd like for Xmas so I really enjoy finding things that they don't even know they'd like IYSWIM? They don't shop online so there's stuff they don't even know existed.

Board game, lego or meccano or electronics kit if he's into making things?

AuntyEntropy · 05/11/2013 15:55

Den kits are fun for that age if you've got a good-sized garden.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2013 15:56

Does he have enough Things On Wheels? (bike, scooter, skates, skateboard....)

DoudousDoor · 05/11/2013 16:01

As children DB and I almost never asked for anything for Christmas. Don't know why really, I suppose we just didn't have any burning desires except the year I begged for a keyboard.

But we were always thrilled to get presents!

How about some fun games he could play with his sister? Or silly tricks like a whoopee cushion?

PeterParkerSays · 05/11/2013 16:06

If he would like a metal detector, how about a GPS to do geocaching instead?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2013 16:08

Bright Minds usually has a lot of stocking filler gadgety things. Also look at the Science Museum range.

Badvoc · 05/11/2013 16:08

Trip to a panto/castle/museum?
The only thing my ds1 (10) has asked for is a nerf gun.
He has lots of books and some DVDs.
Ds2 (5) hasn't sled for anything...so he has loads of little things...slinky, balloon modelling kit, pens, colouring books...

madmomma · 05/11/2013 16:11

What a sweetheart :)

I'd take it to mean that he'd like surprise presents

CrotchStitch · 05/11/2013 17:01

He sounds lovely :)
DS is normally the same, just asks for a DVD or similar and some chocolate. This year though he has asked for an Xbox (big school influence I suspect) which has made life sooooo much easier!
In the past I have bought him things for his hobbies and foody bits, nice clothes etc. I do feel sorry for him sometimes as you say but he seems to enjoy Christmas and what he gets (just like your DS)

I think that's lovely. When my DD was 9 she only wanted a pencil case for christmas.

I couldn't help but buy her lots of other things that I knew she loved though.

milk · 05/11/2013 19:07

Put some money in a savings account and explain that one day when he does want something he can use the money to get it :)

msmiggins · 05/11/2013 19:24

Maybe he just doesn't know what he would like. My DD rarely asks for much but I give alot of thought to gifts that I know she will like, and sure enough she spends many happy hours playing with the surprise gifts that she does get

sadmum1000 · 05/11/2013 21:03

Thanks all for fab ideas. At first I thought his list was empty because maybe he suspected its us ( not Father Christmas) and he knows we are short of money this year. But I presume if he is filling list today with DD6 suggestions that's not the case. Brightminds is a fab idea. Sure I've seen catalogue in the past so will check out.

Lots of tennis balls!
When one of my boys was about 7 all he wanted was a gold colouring pencil!

Ragwort · 05/11/2013 21:33

How nice, makes a refreshing change from the children who demand a great long list of items. Smile. You should be very proud of your son.
