Best family board game

I like to put together a Family Box at Christmas with a film, some chocolate, popcorn and a new board game. Last year we had the game Labyrinth, which we all loved. I am struggling to find one for this year. DS1 will be 9. DS2 is only 2 so any game that appeals to our eldest would be over his head, but if anyone knows of a game he could grow into over the next year or so, but that is not so dull as to interest a 9 year old, that would super helpful! If not, I'm happy to go with maybe two games, one for the elder and one for the younger.

We LOVE Uno in our house. It's great for any age. I have played it with groups of only adults, as you can definitely employ tactics and it can become extremely competitive! But it's simple enough for my 4-5 yr olds to manage a hand on their own. I think even a 3 yo could manage with a little help as it's basically just colour and number match game.

Thanks Merry We have both Uno and Uno Extreme in our house too and love it. I played it as a child with my brothers, so it's been going a long time!

Also I just scrolled down the board and saw there was already a thread about this. Oops, sorry. Off the back of reading that thread, I've just bought Forbidden Planet and Cluedo!

Jenga? DD has been playing this for ages? Poss since aged 2 or 3 (with help!) and we all love it too!
Blokus. DD cracked that one at 4 or 5?

lookout · 03/11/2013 06:54

We have Jenga, that is a good one to try. And Blokus looks interesting too. Thanks for the suggestions Smile

Not exactly a board game, but Qwirkle is v good. My 3 yr old can play with a little help, 7 yr old & adults also enjoy it.

elspethmcgillicuddy · 03/11/2013 07:15

My 2yo likes playing uno with the older one. I like to have her on my team because she shouts uno with every card so I never forget Smile

EustaciaVye · 03/11/2013 07:50

qwirkle is a family favourite in our house

JumpingJackSprat · 03/11/2013 07:55

We love articulate but that's too old for the little one. We also like rapidough and with some help s 3-4 can play.

hulahoopsilove · 03/11/2013 08:09

ive just bought trivial pursuit for us, it has questions for the adults and separate questions for kids

lookout · 03/11/2013 08:21

Ooh, I like the idea of Qwirkle, it's on the wish list for another time.
Elspeth that made me alugh, can just imagine ds2 loving shouting that!
Jumping Anything arty or that way inclined just annoys me, I am so rubbish at it! However, the stealing of the dough does make it sound quite fun!
hula I love TP and my parents are buying us the Family Edition hopefully Smile

Forbidden Island. It's a collaborative game so everyone has to work together to win the game so is quite good for younger ones to join in.

Blongle · 03/11/2013 08:38

Have a look at Gamewright card games as well. They do a lot of games that are simple enough for under 5s but fun for older children as well. Off the top of my head, Slamwich, Too Many Monkeys and Match of the Penguins are both good fun but there are loads of different ones.

MARGUERITE18 · 03/11/2013 08:46

game of life?

lookout · 03/11/2013 10:09

Blongle We ended up getting Forbidden Island after I read the other thread, looks great and dh is very excited about it! Just having a look at the card games now.

Coppit - it's like ludo but much more fun - you have hat shaped characters and if you land on an opponents place, you can take them back to your home/den. It ends up with piles of them, with different people taking piles back to their den and it all changing with the roll of the dice. I think the Entertainer sell it these days.

nothruroad · 04/11/2013 22:47

Christmasopoly Love it!

lookout · 06/11/2013 08:02

Colour looks good and something the 2 year old could join in with. Another one for the wish list!

Cranium seems to be a hit if the Mac d's freebee is anything to go by. I second Uno and Jenga.

BlueChampagne · 06/11/2013 13:51

www.boardgamegeek.com/ is an excellent resource for opinions on games.

We would recommend "Pictureka" - no literacy required as it's spotting (very silly) pictures.

574ejones · 06/11/2013 16:38

Last Word is a game that's popular with our family and is suitable for all ages (and I saw it recently in TK Maxx so should be fairly inexpensive}.

whodunnit · 17/11/2013 02:11

love labyrinth and pictureka both good fun to play with dd who is 7. She is genuinely better at pictureka than the rest of us.

whodunnit · 17/11/2013 02:31

Has anyone played the LOGO game? Which is best version for three generations with the youngest being a 7 year old? Is it any good?

lade · 17/11/2013 09:58

Uno extreme without a doubt.

Good fun, even for adults.

Your two year old, will enjoy pressing the buttons for people and watching the cards fly out (my DD did) and as he gets older, it is easy to play with help. Yet, fun enough for just adults to play.

Personally, I find ordinary uno a bit boring, but the extreme is fab!

lade · 17/11/2013 10:02

whodunnit

We have logo who am I?

We played it as a team game, so my six year old was able to join in last year perfectly well. It's not the best game for adults though, some of the clues were a bit obvious.

This year, I've got pictionary with the two levels of clues (one for children, one for adults) for my seven year old.
