Present idea for musical DD

Looking for an idea for a 'main' present for 7yo DD. She's not hugely into anything specific, is anti- anything overtly girlie or pink. Her one huge love is her music - plays with the school orchestra, practices multiple times per day completely unprompted and for fun. Budget around £50. Any ideas?

Theatre tickets? Our local one often has musical sing a longs, dance, opera etc.

Picturesinthefirelight · 31/10/2013 07:12

A metronome.

A music stand.

A realt nice bag/satchel to carry her music in.

Bakingtins · 31/10/2013 07:19

Does she have a CD player? You can get music books with a backing CD so she can play with "the orchestra" at home. What instrument is she learning? Is another easy to play one an option? ukulele? Junior Guitar? Harmonica?

claraschu · 31/10/2013 07:23

Take her to hear a great orchestra, with a wonderful soloist who is playing a concerto on her instrument. What area do you live in, and what instrument does she play? Maybe one of us will know of the perfect programme-

claraschu · 31/10/2013 07:24

By the way, she sounds absolutely lovely.

DumSpiroSpero · 31/10/2013 08:10

What instrument does she play? might find something here.

Mam23 · 31/10/2013 15:30

Thanks. She plays clarinet.

I've taken her to two orchestral concerts - one our local uni orchestra and the other was the Halle. She loved them both. I might look at getting her some tickets - only downside to that idea is she's not old enough to go alone and tickets for adults are many times more expensive.

She has a music stand and clarinet stand (for her birthday). I can't seem to come up with any other instrument-specific ideas though.

I think one of the concerts I looked at last night had a clarinet duo as part of the programme claraschu I might go back and have another look at that again.

Why not open her eyes to other types of music famously typical for clarinets.

Trad Jazz, Gypsy and Jewish/type used for weddings, swing, mainstream Jazz. There are lots of gigs and cds about as well.

A music bag with clarinet print. There are loads of companies that have specific instrument bits and pieces.
We have got dd a saxophone clock.

Does she have enough music to play, this can usually cost quite a bit and good for a present. Local music shops or internet again.
Has she got a xmas book for Clarinet?

Not a main pressie but what about a baton she can use with cds to practice conducting. My dd asked for one of these after watching the Proms. Grin

It sounds like you already have many CDs so she might already have this. If you search for "Peter and the wolf" cd on Amazon, a Naxos recording narrated by Dame Edna comes up. My 3 year old loves it but I also find myself engrossed by her storytelling. Even for someone who knows the music quite well, the narration is very entertaining. Naxos also have a narrated Swan Lake, Nutcracker etc.

Mam23 · 31/10/2013 20:21

Nice ideas. Thanks again. Yes, we have clarinet Christmas sheet music - mainly carols. Th Naxos recordings sound nice and I hadn't thought about jazz.. ??

Mozart Clarinet Concerto, and Mozart Clarinet Quintet are two absolutely amazing pieces, very beautiful, and very accessible. You could look at CDs of Benny Goodman or Gervase de Peyer, both wonderful players.

moomin3 · 31/10/2013 20:34

How about some pop music books for the clarinet? My dd loves her Adele and glee ones for a bit of light relief

darksparrow · 31/10/2013 20:35

Nice clock radio - my 7 year old loves to listen to music in the morning on it.

dancemom · 31/10/2013 20:50

An iPod?

dementedma · 31/10/2013 21:47

Dd has a mirror in the shape of music notes - we ordered it online and its fabby. She also has music note shaped jewellery and - ahem- music notes tatooed on her hip, but then she is 20!

iheartdusty · 31/10/2013 22:36

our local venue regularly does classical concerts aimed at children - the ticket prices reflect this, and the programme is light and fun but there is generally a full orchestra.

Merrow · 31/10/2013 22:40

Are you in the South East by any chance? If you are anywhere near where the Philharmonia visit I could probably sort out discount tickets (or, if it's Bedford or Leicester, maybe free)

sunbathe · 31/10/2013 23:54

Glockenspiel?

raisah · 01/11/2013 15:22

How about taking her to see the National Youth Orchestra as the tickets are cheaper & it would be more relevant to her to see young people performing.

Another instrument would be a great idea!
An harmonica, ukelele, or recorder would all be affordable, and all have a lot of music available free or nearly free online.
My 7yo plays clarinet too! Smile we went for clarinet as she loves jazz as well as classical music.
Are you near any big cities? Our city has free jazz concerts at teatimes one day a week (at a concert hall) and often lunchtime recitals too (holiday times only for her I suppose, but still good)

Mam23 · 01/11/2013 20:52

Thanks for all the ideas!

Merrow that's really kind of you but we're in Yorkshire, so SE is a bit of a trek.

We're lucky that they do very cheap kids' tickets( £5) but the adult ones are £18-25. Still cheap, but it adds up after a few visits!
