Which kiddy's tablet for Christmas (must do phonics)

Considering getting my 3 year old (born in July) a kiddy electronic tablet either a:-

Leappad Ultra
Innotab 3s
Lexibook
Android adult tablet

We can't afford to buy her an IPad which all our family and friends are suggesting.

It's essential that whatever we buy is highly educational (don't want her playing games for the sake of it) and that it does phonics not just the names of the alphabet. A lot of the apps on the tablets for kiddies use American - English so it'd be great if it uses English - English too if you see what I mean.

If anybody knows anywhere where you they have demo kiddy tablets you could play with too? That would be great.

Opinions please from all of you in the know :-)

I wouldn't get a kiddy tablet. I'd get the best adult tablet you can afford. Apps are usually a few quid compared to much more expensive leappad type games.

Also when she goes to bed you mn do educational stuff too. #

Oh and get a really good protective cover.

Do you have a computer? If so I would look at reading eggs on the internet if it is phonics you want. I know this isn't what you asked but I think it might be better value.

i agree. a proper tablet as the apps are cheaper or manly free.

also a really good cover.

We are very strongly considering an adult android tablet at the mo for all the reasons you've stated. I've done a lot of research (I'm not one for making rush decisions on big purchases) it's 50/50 at the mo as to what we're going to get. I'd love to hear from people who have bought the innotab 3/3s and leappad 2/ultra and how they rate them.

Thanks for the feed back and I'll look into those phonetic egg things.

I'd not heard of a lexibook before, but having just looked it up on amazon I'd say rule that one out straight away. Seems like all their products are terrible, by the look of the reviews.

It's very marmite people either give it 1 star or 5 or on Amazon. I'm not so worried about the technical issues some people have had as it's available from ELC who have a brilliant no quibble return policy, more interested in the quality of the content.

Actually done quite a bit of research Amazon and a like it's people's first hand experiences I'm after. Appreciate your candour though :-), and if I hadn't already looked on Amazon...

The Independent actually lists it as their no.1 rated kiddies tablet. Did they get any kids to test it though? Probably not so asking the next best people parents :-)

Ha, yes marmite sounds about right :o the content of those reviews would be enough to put me off though, personally! Although good to know about the ELC return policy.

I've not seen any MNers mention the lexibook on any tablet threads though - for that one maybe start a separate thread in chat with the name in the title?

niggle123 · 31/10/2013 15:28

MNers? :-)

Assuming you are asking what MNers means :o 'tis short for mumsnetters :)

niggle123 · 31/10/2013 15:52

Lol! Ok thanks :-)
