Family day out ideas

For Christmas this year I want to give vouchers as presents that means that once a month as a family we go out, gives the kids something to look forward to and also means I limit the amount of toys.

I'm thinking:

Meal vouchers - harvester/prezzo/nandos
Activities - cinema/bowling

Any other ideas of generic places (not theme park type places) to go? Large age range.

Also do you think it is better to split vouchers between each of the children ie £10 each towards activity or make each child's gift the whole activity?

Sorry can you explain a little more? Is this for extended family or just your children?

The zoo, ride on a steam train ( for younger children), water park eg Sandcastles in Blackpool, indoor ski slope, farm. If you give us an idea of roughly where you live we might be able to help more.

Ooh, also the theatre, panto, shows like ' the bike show' ( or car show or clothes show depending on what they're into)

You could check out your local theatre for shows, one local to us does horrible science live shows, it looks great.

You could also book one day courses for surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing 'm trying to think of other sports that don't involve getting wet but can't just now.

Go karting or underage driving, you can start at 16 round here as there is a place that does lessons on private land.

Beach clean up, this usually takes place at the end of the season, it's a day out of sorts.

Indoor snowboarding, you can do a one day beginners course.

Science museums, not just London there are others.

Exhibitions e.g ideal home show, motor show you can often get discounted tickets for these.

If you're a bit skint one day just pack some watercolours and get the family painting at a local beauty spot.

Music festival, kid friendly ones include bestival and larmer tree

Can you start by looking at your local tourist info office and local publications, there should be plenty of adverts.

I love this idea, think it's way better than tons of toys.

You're on a role BucketsnSpades - keep them coming Grin

Wally - it's for my immediate family of four, but large age gaps between everyone (elderly father/10 years between siblings).

Just thought it'd be a nice way to give us stuff to look forward to throughout the year.

Re location - keep it south of birmingham and I'll be willing to travel

Great ideas all thanks.
