Will a different tablet be a let down after an ipad?

Asking for my Dsis. My nephew is 6- he has had regular access to her work ipad and has loved using the apps and can use the ipad quite proficiently. He likes a lot of the popular games- Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds etc and also plays educational apps on there. The downside is that the safety restrictions my Dsis puts on (no purchasing, no videos, no age inappropriate stuff etc) seem to have to be set each time he plays on it. She then has to turn them off when she goes on it and so on.

Dsis is considering getting a Hudl, Kindle Fire or something similar for DNephew that would be set up for his use only. Her only reservation is that he is used to the Ipad and it's range of apps, it's intuitiveness etc and is worried that he would soon be hankering after the ipad again.

Has anyone had experience of this and was it a valid concern?

Bumping this as I have been pondering the same question. My 12 year old DDs are always on my iPad but I can't afford to buy two for christmas. I was looking at the tesco Hudle but wonder if they'll be disappointed in it after being so used to an iPad.

I think a Kindle Fire would be fine for him. He can play all the same games he plays on the iPad on the Kindle Fire. DC & DH all have Kindle Fires and they do them fine.

But then I fail to understand the appeal of the iPad. I genuinely feel that people who love it haven't tried other tablets anyway. I use a Windows 8 tablet and the screen sensitivity stopped working last week and I couldn't use any of the Windows functions. I had to tap the Windows button to go back to the start screen every time I wanted to do something new. It was like using an iPad and I felt like throwing it at the wall.

So if that's what he's used to, I don't see the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 being significantly different tbh. HTH

My ds has a galaxy tab 2 and my dd has an ipad. Without a doubt the ipad is is way better. The setup on the galaxy seems so clunky compared to the ipad and i wouldnt buy any other now.

Thank you all -that is helpful. Does anyone know which of the cheaper tablets have a camera? As I know Dnephew enjoys that function on ipad- makes silly photos etc.

What vajazzler said. I have an ipad and dh has a samsung mini. Mine is far more intuitive to use. Mind you having said that he would say he much orefers his, and our DS agrees with him because there are some minecraft things you can only get on android!

It's good to have different points of view on this. Thank you- I know Dsis is concerned about wasting money on the idea. Will feed this back to her.

Personally I'd stick to an iPad, last Christmas we bought ds(9) a tablet, that does everything that an iPad does but isn't iykwim. Fast forward 12 months and although he uses his tablet he always wants my iPad, so this year top of his list is an iPad mini! Stick to an iPad and save yourself some money in the long run. Btw iPad minis are now £229 at Tesco ATM.

I'd stick with Apple if possible, maybe a reconditioned iPad, or iPod Touch.

We have a Nexus and an iPad, and there really is no comparison. They'd all rather use the iPad (and it's not even the newest model), and only use the Nexus as a last resort.

It seems trickier to set up restrictions on Android too, and then you have to mess about with anti-virus software. If we replace our Nexus, it will be with an iPad of some sort.

iPad everytime. My DS uses one and it's restricted to the hilt. He is also 6.
