I heard Aldi's were good and just £10, might try it myself this year

Sillysarah49 · 28/10/2013 15:18

We had the Aldi ones a couple of times last year. Very good value, no waste and pretty tasty. Will probably buy one this year.

PersonalClown · 28/10/2013 15:21

We've had the Aldi 3 bird a few times. They are very nice!
I'm not fond of the 4 bird only because I find duck and goose a bit rich for my tastes.

Katnisscupcake · 28/10/2013 15:55

Oooh I'm so glad someone has started this thread! We've decided to go for one this year as we always talk about it but never get around to it.

This year it's only DH, DD, FIL and myself for Xmas dinner this year so we thought we'd treat ourselves.

Is the ALDI one a good quality one? That may seem like a strange question, but I think Iceland do something similar and it looks a bit 'plastic' if you know what I mean... Confused

thistlelicker · 28/10/2013 15:56

We have had aldi one
For last 4 years !!! Lovely!!!

TheArticFunky · 28/10/2013 16:10

The Tesco £10 is actually very nice.

armani · 28/10/2013 17:19

I bought the aldi one last year, it was nice but I personally wouldnt have it for the big day. But then I like to have lots of leftovers and traditional turkey for the main event Smile .

lookout · 28/10/2013 19:36

armani was it only because you like a traditional turkey that you wouldn't have the bird roast for Christmas day? Or was it not special enough?

Aldi seems popular. I'm having my foodie parents for Christmas so it needs to impress whilst remaining in budget! I might have to try before we buy though. Not sure if it's worth trying several though as I'd probably just end up spending the price of an M&S one!

Aldi have it in store now .., can u try it now and see if u think its good value?

deepfriedsage · 28/10/2013 19:52

We had the M&S one, nice enought, though I haven't bothered with it again.

desperateforaholiday · 28/10/2013 20:36

Ive been thinking of getting the Aldi 3 bird roast as well, the only thing that puts me off is that it may taste like those cook from frozen joints, they are far too salty for me and that would ruin our Christmas dinner

gingerbreadshoes · 28/10/2013 23:01

We had the Aldi one last year and aren't going to bother this year as neither of us were overly impressed.

I would definitely buy one now to try first so you know in advance if you like it.

lookout · 28/10/2013 23:18

We don't have an aldi that near but will pop over and get two in case we like it! We had a frozen roast from lidl the other day and I was pleasantly surprised, so maybe it could work. Will report back. Thanks for the advice Smile

deepfriedsage what are you having this year, out of interest? I'd really like goose but is way over budget Grin I'm mostly concerned that these bird roasts are just gonna taste cheapConfused

Zephrine · 28/10/2013 23:23

We have had the Aldi and Lidl ones - can't fault them, lovely meat, no waste.

deepfriedsage · 28/10/2013 23:45

I have had requests to repeat last years meat. M&S turkey breast and honey Gammon. We tried various honey Gannon and nobody, nor I can replicate M&S one.

Snog · 29/10/2013 03:09

avoid the £100 ocado one. Waste of money!

Katnisscupcake · 29/10/2013 07:32

Look, that's exactly my worry, that it will taste a bit cheap, as you say, like the cook from frozen ones.

We can never normally afford M&S but I may have to stretch the budget for the Honey Gammon deepfried. As it's just the four of us we're tempted to go for a Turkey Crown aswell.

lookout · 29/10/2013 08:12

I'm not that keen on turkey. We've never really had it, to be honest, and it doesn't appeal after all these years without it! Somehow turkey and gammon don't feel special enough.

Apart from a cheaper 3/4 bird roast, I can't really think of anything 'different' and 'special' on a budget though...

OP posts:
TheArticFunky · 29/10/2013 09:01

My concern was that it would taste a bit cheap but it honestly doesn't , it is very tasty.

I have also heard that the expensive ones don't really taste any better than the cheaper ones.

Snog · 29/10/2013 15:26

I'm not sure if the issue with mine was that my mum cooked and presented it tbh! It was fine but not "special" and certainly a poor way to spend £100!

deepfriedsage · 29/10/2013 15:46

Tip for the Gammon, do not cook it as long as they say, undercooked it and it will be juicy and tasty.

Katnisscupcake · 29/10/2013 15:52

Thanks deepfried I'll remember that. Smile

deepfriedsage · 29/10/2013 15:56

Take it out and keep under foil to rest with the turkey early. It's a great cut no fat running through.

lookout · 29/10/2013 18:18

I'm actually thinking about that gammon now...
