So I'm thinking my 2 year old son would really like a toy kitchen and play food as an alternative to the hundreds of toy cars that he currently loves playing with!! Dh however is not so keen and thinks that it would be a waste of money...

Opinions please, and if anyone has seen any bits and bobs on offer please share :-) many thanks x

My ds is 2.5 and I have got him this red Tidlo kitchen for Christmas www.amazon.co.uk/Tidlo-T0148-Kitchen-Station/dp/B004NSUGWC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382729190&sr=8-1&keywords=Tidlo+wooden+kitchen when it dropped down to £53 about a month ago. I also have got him the Melissa and Doug wooden food crates and the Asda wooden market stall for £25. I think he will love it as he has recently started showing an interest in helping me in the kitchen and I like the idea of him having something non car related as he loves them!

Ikea one is great, enough cupboard space to keep everything nice a tidy. Very gender neutral.

breatheslowly · 25/10/2013 20:39

DD is 3 and doesn't use her toy kitchen much. It is a bit of a waste of space if he isn't interested.

BikeRunSki · 25/10/2013 20:42

DS had a toy kitchen at 18 months ish, it still gets attention from him at 5 when I get it out for 2 yo dd.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 25/10/2013 20:44

Im getting the ikea one. Wilkos do great, cheap, toy food.

catgirl1976fucker · 25/10/2013 20:53

I'm getting DS one for Christmas

I love the Little Tikes Wooden One but it is out of stock everywhere at this price and only available at circa £180 which is a bit much.

I also like this one from GLTC but again it's pricey (although they always have 15% off deals, but even still)

I think I might end up going for the red Tidlo one up thread as it's more reasonable and still looks good.

MumOfTheMoos · 25/10/2013 21:03

My DS loves cars but also loves his ikea pits and pans and veg and will be getting a kitchen either for Christmas or when I start my next contract whichever is sooner.

MumOfTheMoos · 25/10/2013 21:04

Pots and pans, obviously....

shockedballoon · 25/10/2013 21:19

I got DS (then just turned 3) one last Xmas. Is a fab double sided wooden one, got it from gumtree for barginous price of £30.
It's largely pale pink but not in your face.
It's in our actual kitchen and DS has had much use out of it and it's made making dinner much easier for me!

He's doesn't play with it as much lately, however he has recently discovered power rangers and basically spends his time making wierd and wonderful blasters/guns/swords out of lego as he has no pr stuff yet.
This Xmas toy decisions are going to be a breeze!

My son got a nice kids kraut kitchen for his 2nd birthday and over a year on it still gets used ever single day. Great imaginative toy for boys and girls.

FixItUpChappie · 26/10/2013 15:57

That should say KidsKraft

enormouse · 26/10/2013 19:11

Ds has just received the ikea kitchen for his 2nd birthday (2 days ago) complete with pans, utensils and food and adores it. It's been reduced from £90 to £65 for both the bottom and microwave unit.
It's lovely quality and fits in nicely with our kitchen.

Bakingtins · 26/10/2013 19:17

My two boys have a nice wooden one (John Crane, got it 2nd hand on eBay) and both still play with it at 7 and 3. They have been given lots of play food as gifts from family members. ikea do v good pots and pans.
I help in a crèche at church and all the kids there (0-3) seem to make a beeline for the toy kitchen every week.

RandallFloyd · 26/10/2013 19:23

I think it's something you have to be absolutely sure they would get a lot of use out of, they take up a lot of room and are quite an expensive thing. Has he played with one before at all? If not I'd try and find a friend/play group with one or perhaps a toy shop with one on display first.

My DS loves the one my niece has, plays with it every time we go there so I got him one last Christmas thinking I'd hit the present jackpot. He's barely touched it, it just sits in the corner of my tiny house mocking me.

We spent ages looking for an indestructable toy kitchen last xmas when our DS had just turned 2. We went for this one and we were so pleased with our choice. So well made, it came fully assembled too. Its very heavy. Be warned though... we had to spend a bit extra to finish it off, we bought saucepans, plates, a tea set and also a toy microwave from amazon. Our family bought him a market stall and some wooden food too. A really lovely gift!

We bought DS one when he was two as at playgroup he was either playing with the train set or in the kitchen. We've only just got rid of it and he's 9.5.

Dd had this food set when she was 2 and we've had years of use from that one too Smile

MrsPear · 26/10/2013 20:47

I got this one for my little boy amazon - it is still going strong two years later and is a snip at £31. It is basic but the knobs turn and the door opens. He still cooks on it now in fact.

MrsPear · 26/10/2013 20:48

Oh and it is not too big - it fits in the toy cupboard.

My Nephew's 2 and a bit and loves his toy kitchen. Since both the uncles he sees regularly cook, another uncle made it to a late round of masterchef and his dad can at least prepare food (wouldn't call it cooking as such) he sees getting busy with food as something his male role models do. None of the women in my family are any bloody use at all in the kitchen.

sleepdodger · 27/10/2013 11:07

Henrietta I just bought them from sainos too, along with a toaster and kettle for about 1.50 each, and not all pink either!!

BreadAndJamForFrances · 28/10/2013 10:12

My two DDs and DS had a kitchen and food, pots/pans and a shop...they didn't stop playing with it until DS was 7.5ish and still reminisce over it now....so much that they want to buy their 1 year old cousin one for Christmas, so they can play with it with her!!
If you wanted a basic set to start of with and see if your little boy interested, B&M have a kitchen with utensils for £9.99 and a huge food set for £9.99. It is plastic, but a great starter set and red not pink!

galwaygirl · 28/10/2013 10:18

We got DD a white KidsKraft kitchen for her second birthday. Her car obsessed cousin (also 2) loves playing with it and his parents bought him one too in the end.
We go to a playgroup nearby and the boys play with the kitchen as often as the girls.
