Hi all, need to get some sound advice about whether to get a 7 year old girl a CD player so she can play music or an iPod/nano thing so she can download music from a computer (xmas prezzy). I get the feeling that maybe CD players are a thing of the past, but don't own an iPod, so don't really understand how they work in terms of headphones or can you buy speakers for a room?

Thanks CallMeNancy, so thats a vote for the iPod then. Goodness, I'm such a dinosaur when it comes to technology, I tend to stick to what I know, but in this day and age I suppose it does not do to hold back the young ones with prehistoric gadgets. Does anyone know what the life span of these things are, as she is quite heavy handed?

I would say an mp3 may work work for you, as iPods can get very expensive. Same job, lower cost.

I got this www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Sansa-Player-Expandable-MicroSD/dp/B002NX0ME6/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

It's small, durable, stores a lot of music. Very easy to use (got my Grandad on for Christmas last year!) and not horrendously expensive - good if she's heavy handed!

This looks really good MaddestOfTheHatters, it's got a protective case and speaker/ docking thing and the price is reasonable too. Where do you buy the music from this though?

This mp3 player works on a copy/paste format, so any music already on the computer can be quickly transferred over. Any cds she has that she would like putting on can be ripped to the computer, then copy and pasted over.

For new music you can buy the music files directly from amazon and download them straight to the player. If you take a look in amazon music, there is the option to buy mp3 files instead of cds. There are also other online retailers like itunes that offer this too. Both amazon and itunes sell vouchers too!

DD is 6 and she has a (cheapy) mp3 player. We buy her music from Amazon and it's usually about 89p per track. She has separate (also cheapy) speakers. It's great. We also have a wire in the car that she can plug into the mp3 player so she can have her music on when we're travelling.
