any ideas for a 5 yo who likes 'sorting'

DS’s obsession is ‘sorting’. He likes to get all of my plastic containers out of the cupboard and sit with all his lego and sort it all into colours, or he sorts all his dinosaurs into categories, or places picture cards in the ‘right’ order, books into genres etc etc… does anyone know of any games/toy ideas that will appeal to him? (He does tend to go though phases but this seems to be a character trait he’s always had)
You’d think we’d have a really tidy and organised house but alas, me and DP’s messiness swamp Ds’s orderliness so far…

This looks great! I think they will deliver to uk but you'd have to allow a bit of time. I can't find it anywhere in uk but have been coveting it for ds (4) for a while. They do other ones too - pet, sealife and a farm I think.

Will I ever remember to click convert links?!

Or this? In the uk. Learning resources have quite a bit actually

A database? Grin

a chess set might appeal to his orderly, logical mind? Or something like Rummikub which involves sorting into suits or same numbers?

Don't throw away the Christmas cards! I used to sort those within an inch of their life when I was that age.

Compare Bears.

A giant jar of all your.spare change? Keeps dd occupied for hours.

jobnockey · 22/10/2013 19:53

Brilliant suggestions, thanks! Those stacker toys look ace for ds, right up his street, I might direct grandparents that way...
He already has jar of pennies to sort, and buttons( I can remember playing with my mum's button tin when I was little)
I wonder if he'll always have the organising trait?

I found another one, it is expensive and I think probably aimed at use in a school rather than at home but it would keep him occupied for a while!

Dd is into art and sewing. However, I think she enjoys organizing her sewing box (which she has given a name) as much as she enjoys sewing, same with craft cupboard!
I really would set him off on your cupboards-why waste that energy!

jobnockey · 23/10/2013 09:13

I think he might have some of that learning resources stuff at his school you know, I saw a photo of him having lined all the small dinosaurs into colours! I like the idea of that sorting pie, but seems expensive for what it is? I think I might get him some different coloured and shaped beads and buttons (and bowls to sort into,) and some laces to thread onto so he can make patterns...
Wonder if he could organise the shed of doom outside????

A big tub of marbles might go down well.

iseenodust · 23/10/2013 12:06

Top trumps eg Moshi Monsters as these younger packs don't need great reading. Order by size, favourites etc. Junior rush hour.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 23/10/2013 21:31

what about something like this so he can sort into boxes

MortifiedAdams · 23/10/2013 22:19

Would he like a Fuzzy Felt? Dd was playing with one and it.is full.of loads of little sortable felt pics.

educatinginyorkshire · 23/10/2013 22:25

Mosaics. My DS (6) has loved these for a couple of years. Google 'pirate mosiacs' on Amazon. I think your DS will LOVE them - basically sticking coloured dots on to cards to make pictures - you have to match the right colours. It looks like an massive chore to me, but DS loves it.
