I have 9 year old. Never been bothered with barbies or dolls has announced that this year she would like a barbie house for Christmas! Still totally believes in FC. What would you do? They aren't cheap so would hate to spend lots of money on something she,ll play with for a few weeks.
We were thinking of getting her an iPod so completely thrown now what to do.any advice great fully received.

See if you can get one second hand ?

I did this! Blush
I really wanted it though... I bought stuff with my own birthday/christmas money instead though. I think it was a mini existential crisis about growing up...

Ive seen one in costco which is similar and half the price so might consider that

Is she testing you re fc?

staverton · 20/10/2013 12:26

I did this as a 9 yr old child and asked for a flower fairy house. Played with it once. Waste of money!

My dd wanted a dolls house for her ninth birthday. She's not girls either and has never been into imaginative play. I was a bit reluctant and I was worried she would be teased at school. On the other hand it seemed wrong to get her a DS or something when she wanted a toy.

I did a bit of reading on it and read that nine is a good age for a dolls house but that nowadays we buy them for three year olds when they are really too young. then they don't want to play with them when they are older. A bit like how toddlers are dressed in Disney princess clothes so that by the time they are old enough to actually enjoy the film, the clothes and other merchandise seem babyish.

Anyway, we got her a Lundby house and she does play with it. She loves moving the furniture around. When she has friends over they play with it too.

Takver · 20/10/2013 13:21

I'd agree that 9 is the perfect age for a dolls house - all the possibilities for making furniture, dressing the dolls etc. I remember loving my sindy horse / tack etc around 10 or so.

I might check out whether I could find one second hand on ebay though!

bigwellylittlewelly · 20/10/2013 14:41

Has she recently been to another childs house and played with one there?

Interestingly we were intending on buying our three year old a simple dolls house this year as her best friend has one and she loves it. May reconsider.

queenebay · 20/10/2013 14:47

Yes she's been at her friends house who had a huge one. Think we,ll go and look in Costco again. Thanks for all tour help

I would get her one of the wooden ones (like elc have on offer, similar to the one at Costco ) if she doesn't play with it for very long you could use it as a shelving unit? we are considering getting on for dd2 (almost 8) and i'm sure my almost 10 year old would play with it too.

jamtoast12 · 20/10/2013 20:31

Yes I agree 9 perfect age. gps got dds a large wooden one with all the furniture when they were 3&5. It must have all come to about £200!!!! Its hardly been touched. Its designed to be loved, you can paint, wall paper and even add lights to it but dds hardly uses it and I feel so guilty when the GPS visit! At the age of 5 they'd have been better with a plastic one as they'd love this now if theyd just got it age 8&6.

SavoyCabbage · 20/10/2013 21:27

If you look online at the houses, you can find out the scale and then you can work out what furniture fits what house. So we have the Lundby house with Sylvannian Family furniture.

There's also the 'real' dolls houses like on the Dolls House Emporium website.

Louise1956 · 29/10/2013 05:06

Get her what she wants. Why buy her an electronic device that she doesn't want, when you could get her something fun that she does want? And she can play with a Barbie house with her friends, much more enjoyable than listening to a dreary iPod.

kitsmummy · 29/10/2013 06:57

If she wants a barbie house I'd get her an actual barbie house, not some other make. It's probably the hideous pink plastic that she wants, not a more tasteful version!

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 29/10/2013 07:30

Agree that kids get certain toys "stupidly" young.

My DS of 11 asked for the lego city police station ( bit like a boys version of a doll's house I guess).

I gave it to him.

I do not mind if he does not end up playing with it for years, it was sweet really. He is a young 11.

Let them be kids.

I played with my dolls house until I was 12. Kept it jn the attic, not my room. Never had a barbie, but would have loved it.

Kids don't like wooden stuff IMO though

SavoyCabbage I have just ordered a Lundby house from Zulily for myself my dd who is 8.5, so I am glad to hear your daughter plays with hers, although Sylvanians are largely ignored in our house so I am hoping it will be a success. I just wish the Lundby dolls house people weren't so strange looking!
