Still dithering re ipad

We have a Windows PC which is quite elderly but works OK - DH uses it a lot. I have a laptop and am happy with it. Both DH and I have Kindles although DH does not use his nearly as much as I use mine. Given this is there any point in me buying DH an ipad for Christmas? What can you do on an ipad that you cannot do on the PC. I really cannot think of anything else to get him as he is perfectly happy with what he has and never wants anything!

Well I broached the question as to what he would like for Christmas and mentioned an ipad amongst other (much cheaper and not very likely to inspire him) presents. He's not interested in having an ipad so that's that. Haven't a clue what to get him now. It's the same every year. Never knows what he wants and I have run out of ideas this year. Just feel like not bothering as it is so hard to find anything he will use/enjoy.

Why not give him a 'cheque book' of promises, that he can 'cash in' when he wants to, over the year?

I often book a weekend away for us as a present as that is what we both like to do the most. Or theatre/concert tickets?

Thanks for the ideas amistillsexy and reddaisy. I will give your ideas some thought.

Is he a gamer? The new xBox One of Playstation?

Firebox and I Want One Of Those always have some great present ideas.

I love my iPad and I'm not gadgety at all. When I used to travel I would take (depending on length of journey /how long away for>

  • work related book
  • fiction/reading for pleasure book
  • notebook
  • laptop with DVD attachments
  • magazine
  • iPod
  • papers to read, journal articles to catch up on

Now I just take my iPad. It's so quick and easy, I hardly ever touch the laptop any more.

If money is no object, I'd get the iPad.

The tablet itself isn't the point, there are so many quirky/useful/niche apps, that for an extra 69p you will find the thing comes into it's own.

Otherwise, an annual pass for somewhere? A weekend break?

MonstersBalls · 18/10/2013 08:35

An ipad is completely different to a desktop computer. My dh is a luddite resistant to technology but even he uses the iPad for its various apps and easy access to the internet.

How about a lower end tablet?

CrotchStitch · 18/10/2013 08:47

We have hit an iPad mini, ostensibly for DH to take to work to look up spares on site with.
It is his pride and joy and this is a man who is still using a £14.99 Nokia contractors phone with no hint of shame or desire to upgrade :o
I think monsters is correct that it is so much more than just a tablet. We really struggle now to see how we never had one before and can easily see how households have 2 or 3.

Have now shopped for his gifts. Thanks for all the ideas. I have got him a telescope which I know he will love, some smart shoes and tickets for a theatre show I know he will enjoy. Thanks for your help everyone. It got my brain working.
