I'd really like to make one of these for ds for Christmas - anyone got any fab ideas or also tips on where to buy things the cheapest?

So far I've thought of the following but it's budget dependent

Small briefcase? 2nd hand?
Magnifying glass - got
Invisible ink pen
Spy glasses
Cardboard covered in newspaper with eyeholes cut out
Some kind of mini telescope
Finger print ink pad
Notebook
Binoculars
Moustache / moustache tattoos
Torch

?????

Ds is turning 7 at Christmas

I can't advise where to get stuff but that sounds amazing! I would have absolutely loved that as a child.

Not sure if he's old enough but could you get a code book as well? Or one of those cypher wheels.

BeaWheesht · 17/10/2013 08:28

Oh I've got him a code book is forgotten about that. Don't know what a cypher wheel is - will have a look thanks

Wig to change his hair

wonderingsoul · 17/10/2013 09:18

ohh deff a wig.

handcuffs?

ohhh things that he can find as evideance... like carboard cut out shoes prints....

cellotape and dusting stuff for lifting finger prints of things.

dispoable camara?

i LOVE this idea. so quirky, unquie and fun.

beanandspud · 17/10/2013 09:26

Great idea! I had this one when I was little - I used to read it over and over again.

BeaWheesht · 17/10/2013 09:30

Brilliant thanks guys.

He has a trilby already Hmm and he's getting a metal detector. Has walkie talkies but hasn't played with them in ages so might hunt them out.

Love the wig idea - definitely will do that. Love the passport idea too - might get some passport photos of him and make little ID cards so he can go undercover as different professions - could do effects on computer so he has different disguises on....

beanandspud I had that book too and I loved it!

How about spy glasses or disguise glasses?

KillerKoalaFaceFromSpace · 17/10/2013 10:55

What a brilliant idea!

I got a Spy Filofax from the book club at school and I LOVED IT! I'm trying to remember what was in it and the most memorable was a few pages showing the hand actions for sign language alphabet so you can communicate with other spies silently. Also it showed how morse code works. Is that naff now that we have email and text messages?

There were also code breaker puzzles and pages full of tips to keep your room secure. Like cellotaping a hair over your door so you'd know if someone went in without your permission.

I must have driven my family crazy.

You can get listeny things which look a bit like an MP3 player. It just amplifies sound.

I had Spy's guidebook by Colin King as a child and loved it. I was delighted to find it is still in print. DD now loves it, too!

There is a thing in there called a whifflepoof ( iirc) which is a log with nails in that you drag behind you to disguise your tracks. GrinGrinGrin

fuzzpig · 17/10/2013 11:13

Oooh Filofax

I also loved the Detective Guidebook and Spy Handbook, usborne I think - recently rebought them on eBay :o

fuzzpig · 17/10/2013 11:16

You know what I really really want to find for my DCs (yes. For them. Honest.) was a little several-in-one tool, which had fold out lenses to make a magnifying glass/binoculars, a whistle, a compass etc, it was THE BEST

Leopoldina · 17/10/2013 11:18

YY fuzzpig - the Usborne book of spies and spying has just been reprinted as some anniversary edition (it was their first publication or something) - exactly the same edition as my brother's that I pinched... a WONDERFUL book.

3birthdaybunnies · 17/10/2013 12:39

Planning a spy party - though mainly girls. There are some good ideas around on google for party filler type presents. I'm going to put in led finger lights, ring watch, am making lie detector cards using thermocromatic spots which change colour when skin is hot/cold. Also spy id cards, fake passports. You could give him evidence bags too.

Not really a present but a 'laser' course seems a popular game - zig zagging thread with bells on across a passageway. Maybe you could set one up on Christmas Eve.

Merrow · 17/10/2013 12:55

To go with the ID cards you could print off different business cards to go with his different personas?

DontMentionThePrunes · 17/10/2013 12:55

Manila envelopes and a stamp (with red ink pad) that reads 'TOP SECRET'.

Ohwhatwitcheryisthis · 17/10/2013 13:02

OOOOO make me one too! I always wanted various spy kit shite when young-mainly David McCallum but that's something else. I truly believed in Man from Uncle but hated James Bond. (well that's outed me as fucking ancient)
I think it's brilliant!

beanandspud · 17/10/2013 13:14

Fuzzpig I'd completely forgotten about the Detective one - just had a look online and the memories came flooding back of setting up my bedroom as a detective's office with a bell above the door, tape measure along the doorframe and talcum powder for capturing footprints.

I have just placed an order for both books Blush - DS will grow into them and in the meantime...

BeaWheesht · 17/10/2013 14:07

I might go into business making them for adults!
