Unusual stocking fillers that aren't plastic tat

ObtuseAngel · 16/10/2013 13:05

The things that websites and shops tout as stocking fillers are usually nasty overpriced plastic toys that break straight away. What we need is a nice long list of things that will be cheap, useful and interesting. Obviously everyone already knows about patterned pencils and unusually shaped rubbers, but it would be good to have other stuff too.

I will contribute:

Plaque disclosing liquid/tablets. DS got a pack of these in a party bag last year and I thought WTF, but he and DD really loved using them.

Mini magnetic bookmarks, DS is a keen reader but gets very frustrated if his bookmark falls out and he looses his place so I bought him these and he loves them.

Oneday

I always add a pair of laces into my Converse mad daughters stocking. I know those Beanie dolls. I'll keep an eye out. I used to buy those Guatemalan worry dolls in a box. Fairtrade do them.

Matchbox dolls here

PeppermintPasty · 18/10/2013 21:25

I know I'm going on, but I want to buy everything on the myriad site. Can't believe I've never come across it before.

Confusedbyyou · 18/10/2013 21:29

Is it way overpriced? I'm sure you could get it a lot of it cheaper with a little bit of research

PeppermintPasty · 18/10/2013 21:58

I agree it's very dear. I'm at the salivating stage (yuk!) at the moment. Wanting to buy it all but sadly thinking it will be one or two bits in reality. Though I might ask my mum to buy my two the amazing dragon and horse that you step into. How do you do links? I'm so rubbish.

Elsiequadrille · 18/10/2013 22:19

I don't think you can get the brands much cheaper; Grimms, Ostheimer etc Though you might find some cheaper on German ebay, especially in bulk (I have done this).

But those felt fairies and figures you can make yourself quite easily from stockinette, stuffing and felt. Some of the wooden pieces you may find sellers have tried to replicate on Etsy. Same for the play silks. Also try My-Kea for hand made, ethically produced wooden products. Slight saving I think, but have to wait to have them made.

Nicnacnoo sell the dragon and horse costume too, not sure on price.

Elsiequadrille · 18/10/2013 22:21

Searching for waldorf toys on Etsy usually works.

PeppermintPasty · 18/10/2013 22:31

You are very well informed. Thanks Thanks

PeppermintPasty · 18/10/2013 22:36

Wow. Another quick search on toyella.com and the dragon and pony are on there at 30 & 20 pounds cheaper respectively. Amazing!

PeppermintPasty · 18/10/2013 22:40

Actually, toyella.com looks like a nice little site too.

Torches are a hit with my dc as they love crawling down into their duvets & making tents & lighting their torches.

Cremolafoam · 19/10/2013 10:38

Raisah you have reminded me of an idea I did for nephew a couple of years ago which was a fort kit.
I bought a tarp, bungees, pegs, mini compass , glow sticks, mini binoculars, army rations, emergency chocolate , silver blanket, tin billy can, water bottle, etc.
Might make a good stocking for an adventurous child!
A lot of the camping stuff I got in Poundland .

chocoluvva · 19/10/2013 12:07

What a fantastic thread.

Thank you for the ideas: I've ordered loads of stuff now. Am very happy.

That's reminded me that I need to find a compass and torches!

Badvoc · 19/10/2013 13:16

Glow sticks are very popular with my 2!
Got mine at John Lewis in the sale but you can get them anywhere.
If anyone needs Xmas fleecy blankets, just got 2 red Nordic type ones from matalan for £5 each!
They are lovely and quite big.
The magnetic bookmarks arrives thismorning...thanks!

chocoluvva · 19/10/2013 20:49

Matalan! Thank you for the reminder - I always forget about Matalan.

My teenage DD has wanted a fleecy blanket for ages. That'll fill her stocking. Grin

Badvoc · 19/10/2013 21:04

fruitcorner · 19/10/2013 21:07

DuvetHog · 19/10/2013 23:21

I would like something under £3 if poss for token gift to a few little girls I know.
