If there's something your dc wants and you know it's shit do you get it anyway?

Ds is 4 and is set on a furreal kitty - currently reduced to £33 on amazon which is the cheapest I've seen them, rrp is £50 (£50!)

It is total utter crap. It does basically nothing and will more than likely be ignored after a day.

Do I:
A) get it now because Im fairly sure he isn't going to change his mind and it's at least slightly cheaper.
B) leave it and hope he changes his mind but if he doesn't get it nearer christmas when it might be more expensive.
C) not get it at all

It's tricky because I don't think children shouldn't necessarily get everything they want but it makes it more tricky if it is a gift they are asking Santa for.
I don't think this toy is value for money at all. Otoh he's been coveting it since it came out a few months ago and I don't think he's likely to change his mind hence he will notice if it's not there on christmas morning. It's actually the only thing he's consistently mentioned despite me saying "but it does nothing" "Santa could bring this instead" etc etc.

Do you usually get what your dc have asked for (within reason) even if you KNOW it will be shit?

We say the stocking and one present come from santa - this is the gift he wants from santa since I said we wouldn't buy it!
On the other hand I've just seen the thread about what age they stop playing with toys and it looks to be about 9. So we only have a few more toys left. This makes me want to buy lots of toys.

As an aside I believe they should rename Thomas the tank 'Thomas the cunting tank engine and his wanky friends.'

Few more toy years left that should read.

well, ds is 10 (nearly 11)

his room is still full of lego and k'nex. he doesn't play with it in the same way he used to, but he still creates/build/designs and engineers with it.

we have a huge wooden railway set, accumulated from ebay over several years. It had all been put away and dd2 got it all out this weekend. Ds has been sitting on the lounge floor building railway configurations (for dd2 of course, not for himself) he has spent hours doing it.

Don't worry about them growing out of toys

(and he still has a shelf of teddies, and one in the bed)

NannyPlumForPM · 08/10/2013 14:15

I would get it, I really would.

I have bought a minnie mouse shite jet for the same reason.
But she will love it. And he will love hilary.

CoolStoryBro · 08/10/2013 14:16

If they really really want it, I get it. DS still adores the singing McDonalds fish that hangs on the wall 4 years later. It's ridiculous but he REALLY wanted that fish!

SugarHut · 08/10/2013 14:29

I never got a Mr Frosty, I still remember being distraught that Father Christmas hadnt listened...

HenriettaPye · 08/10/2013 16:39

In in the exact same position. DS (3) wants blublu the dolphin. Only available in argos, and it's £49.99. This is the one toy he tells EVERYONE that Santa is bringing him. He talks about other crap that he wants, such as a golden coin maker, stompeez, etc but not as much as blublu. I had decided I wasn't going to get it as it's too expensive to sit on a shelf gathering dust. However my sister has bought it for my niece, so when he sees her at Christmas he will be heartbroken that Father Christmas has brought it for his cousin and not for him. My sister has opened it and has confirmed it is indeed shit.

I'm going to have to buy it, aren't i? Sad

fuzzpig · 08/10/2013 16:43

£50 for a fecking stuffed fish?!? Crikey no wonder you are :(

On the Argos site it has good reviews/star rating though (according to the mobile site anyway) so maybe it won't be too bad...

HenriettaPye · 08/10/2013 17:12

I know fuzz, I could buy him a fecking tank full of fish for £50!

Stillhopingstillhere · 08/10/2013 17:13

Ds briefly mentioned blublu but I said no way could santa bring blublu and daisy. Plus blublu was only available at argos and santa does not go to argos!
Maybe they will reduce the price? To £1?

I still remember not getting a Mr Frosty or a Girl's World as though it was yesterday! Get the cat. In a couple of years you can do the review thing, my eldest two (8 & 9) have both crossed Orbeez Foot Spa off their lists after a quick look at Amazon.

HenriettaPye · 08/10/2013 17:39

I was going to get it in the argos 3 for 2 but there was nothing else around that value I wanted. i didn't want to buy it and 2 things around £20 then still have to pay £70!

Ragwort · 08/10/2013 17:45

No, I refuse to buy crap rubbish presents. If my DS wants something that I consider is a total waste of money I suggest he uses his own savings/Christmas money (he is fortunate in that most of our relatives give cash instead of presents) - funnily enough he then decides it probably isn't really worth it. Grin.

Idespair · 08/10/2013 17:50

If your child is old enough, you can show them/let them read Amazon reviews of the toy they want. You can always find loads of poor reviews. My dc ask for stuff advertised on CITV and then say mummy can you look it up on Amazon Grin to check whether it is good

Stillhopingstillhere · 08/10/2013 17:54

The amazon reviews are good! These people must have either more money than sense outlaw expectations because I've see the cat in action and would only give it two stars! At most!

OP posts:
Stillhopingstillhere · 08/10/2013 17:55

Or low not outlaw. I have low expectations of my iPad and auto correct too.

See I've been quite pleased that at the moment my DCs don't watch commercial telly (DVDs only) - so they don't see adverts and haven't heard of the latest toys etc... but then they will be exposed to advertising/more peer pressure at some point anyway and will doubtless be taken in, so maybe I'm just delaying the inevitable!

Having read the various 'shit toys' threads (well worth a read!) I've concluded that if a toy needs heavy advertising it is probably crap. Fail safe stuff like basic lego, wooden bricks, wooden train track etc tends not to be so 'pushed' IYSWIM as it doesn't need it. Mind you I have seen adverts for playmobil (which does not count as tat IMO!) so maybe I'm wrong!

SugarplumKate · 08/10/2013 20:38

I have no advice except that DD had the cat and it was complete rubbish, and very 'mechanical' feeling - so you couldn't really stroke or cuddle it. She did love it though it really wasn't worth the money. One evening, after months of not working, it suddenly came to life and scared the crap out of our babysitter!! I'd probably buy it again though if she was really set on it.
