My husband works as a bar manager , and would like to buy all the staff a present at christmas . The staff are mainly women in their late 50s . What do you think he should get . We are happy to spend up £10 each , but we dont them well enough to get individual gifts . I suggested a poinsetta and a lottery ticket . But any suggestions would be great

Nice bottle of bath oil, box of chocs or plant or bottle of wine?

Murdermysteryreader · 07/10/2013 21:25

Nice bottle of bath oil, box of chocs or plant or bottle of wine? It is the thought that counts.

mirry2 · 07/10/2013 21:25

Box of chocolates or a christmas card with a Boots gift voucher inside. Best present I ever got from my manager was a christmas card and a small bag of chocolate coins - my year's bonus. He couldn't afford to give us any more and we really appreciated it.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 07/10/2013 21:25

I think lottery tickets are a good idea.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 07/10/2013 21:27

Doesn't he know any of them well enough to know whether they'd like chocolates/book voucher/craft voucher/bottle of wine/beauty voucher? There isn't going to be one thing they would all love is there... so you have to either choose them individually or just choose something most people like - tin of quality street type thing or what you suggested. It's a nice 'I don't know you - but Happy Christmas' gift.

paintinglady · 07/10/2013 21:31

It doesn't have to be expensive and i don't think that gifts are expected . I think he wants them to feel appreciated .

£10 would buy a very nice box of chocolates, I'd love to be given that.
I wouldn't give a plant, not everyone has the time or inclination to care for them.

paintinglady · 07/10/2013 21:36

Unfortunately he doesn't really know them that well , chocolates feel a bit generic .
Another idea was personalised mugs for work and a box of biscuits . Every gift i have had from work has been pretty thoughtless .
This is the first christmas he has worked here and he wants it to be special , but not too expensive , as there about 20 staff .

Thats true about a plant , i just thought it was essentially christmassy .

I (39YO) love all the christmassy foodie gifts in Lakeland, but so does my mum (63) and MIL (70ies). So good across the age ranges. Link is in the £10-£13 budget.

I'd suggest if you do personalised mugs, go for a pretty design and fine bone china feel. I hate the heavy, man-tea mugs (as does my mum and mil). Sorry for gender stereotyping but it's what me and my mums' would like.

everydayaschoolday · 07/10/2013 22:17

This is a nice shaped mug from Getting Personal:

I've ordered from them before and they're very good

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 07/10/2013 22:17

How many staff is he planning to buy presents for?

everydayaschoolday · 07/10/2013 22:29

Sorry, that mug's not very christmassy....crap steer

BillyBanter · 07/10/2013 22:31

Posh handcream?

TigOldBitties · 07/10/2013 22:39

Not a suggestion exactly, but try looking at 'not on the high street', you can set a price limit, but also there are quite a lot of items that can be personalised.

Sometimes I do find it overpriced but it often gives me inspiration and then I find what I want cheaper elsewhere.

Allalonenow · 07/10/2013 23:06

Just had a quick look at the Lakeland link posted above. They have a 3 for 2 offer on at the moment, with a good selection of sweets and chocs in the £3-£4 range.
You could get two items per person across the whole range, well within your budget, and do a lucky dip with them during Christmas week, a bit of fun for your staff.
Also, delivered to your door, so one thing less to worry about at a busy time.

IsleOfRight · 07/10/2013 23:32

Posh chocs nice eg a tiny hotel chocolat box each.

What a nice bloke your dh sounds like.

Or a decent bottle of wine and a selection box.

Patsiecat · 08/10/2013 00:18

What a nice idea. I'm not a plant person but would be very happy with a box of chocs/bottle of wine. Thorntons are doing 5 boxes for £20 at the mo, could give them a box of chocs each and nice bottle of wine (Dino Prosecco is half price in Tesco £6.49, they have others too around the same price). M&S do lovely foodie gifts or for something different, keep an eye on Groupon, I got a lovely slate cheese board from there for less than £10.

OverAndAbove · 08/10/2013 06:56

I think a bottle of wine and a selection box is a fab idea. He'll get a good deal on the wine and 3for2 on the sweets, and to be frank, anyone that doesn't like it will easily be able to regift it. Job done!
