What's " stir up Sunday " ??

Hassled · 26/09/2013 22:27

24th November. You have ages. Although that does feel a bit late for me.

I see some people have made their cakes etc already but I always thought it was in October.

In My Naughty Little Sister, the grandmother used to do it on bonfire night as it took her mind off the fireworks which she didn't like Grin

Thank you, loving the Naughty Little Sister story, so cosy Smile

After Bonfire Night, Stir Up Sunday marks the real beginnings of all things Yuletide chez nous.

We all have a stir of the mixture, make a wish then into the oven it goes.

And then no bugger eats the damned thing.

Despite that small detail, it's a tradition I love.

Regarding the post-baking neglect of said cake, I've been flirting with the idea of a lighter fruit cake, think Nigella does one but not sure if it would last as long?

I'm making mine today to get it out of the way. Just need to find a non marzipan icing option though.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/09/2013 12:04

I plan to make mine this weekend. Must put the fruit in to soak today.

Iheart - I am going to try fudge instead of marzipan. I hate marzipan, and my gran used to do this years ago.

TheYamiOfYawn · 27/09/2013 12:18

fudge instead of marzipan sounds intriguing. I'm allergic to almonds, so just use apricot jam and icing, but I was thinking of having a go at making fake marzipan using apricot kernels. What do you with the fudge? Just roll it out thinly?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/09/2013 13:03

Well I've never done it before, Yami, but my Gran used to make a quite thick slab the right size and put it on the top - but my grandfather had an extremely sweet tooth! I am intending to roll it quite thinly and use it like marzipan would be. I think it will work.

I have just measured out all my fruit and doused them generously in cognac. I'll leave them to soak for a day or two and then get on with making the cake.
